Please welcome Jessica who is guest posting today!
The bedroom should be a pleasant room that we look forward to retiring to each evening, but more often than not it ends up cluttered, unorganized and a combination of storage room, home office and bedroom all in one! But it doesn’t have to be like that. With some clever restyling and cost-cutting tips, you can restyle your bedroom to create a trendy, comfortable and peaceful room that you won’t want to leave each morning. Set a budget for the bedroom restyle project. Factor in things like new furniture, bedding and paint if required. It’s also important to choose a theme or style that you want for the bedroom. This will help you to select bedding, accessories and colors for the room. Popular bedding trends this year are:
- Country Chic – Featuring subdued floral designs and rustic vintage touches like imitation oil lamps, distressed wood picture frames and dried flower arrangements.
- Global Style- Focuses on ornate fabric designs from places like India and Thailand. Gold highlights, mountains of throw cushions and hanging wall fabrics complete the theme.
- Geometric Monochrome – In line with the latest fashion styles, geometric black & white styles are becoming popular in the bedroom. This clean and functional style requires extra investment in storage space to hide any clutter.
- Bold and Bright – Bright colors and bold stripes are the focus for this style, with geometric art prints and colorful picture frames and lamps finishing off the look.

- Repainting:
Repainting the bedroom will require a lot extra work, but the results can really transform a room, especially if the room hasn’t been refreshed in a long time. Consider painting the wall behind the bedhead in a different color to create a feature wall.

- Replace the Linen:
The main focus of a bedroom is usually the bed, and you can revitalize the room with a simple change of linen. Take a look at the latest duvet covers from online vendors websites. The new styles, colors and designs are beautiful and can be a great focal point for your bedroom makeover.

- New Lighting
If your bedroom doesn’t have it already, think about having light dimmer switches installed in the room. If your budget doesn’t stretch far enough to hire an electrician, you can buy bedside lamps that have dimmer switches which serve the same purpose.

- Bedroom Accessories
Many printing shops can now print your favorite photo or images onto canvas, and this affordable artwork can look fantastic in the bedroom. An antique chair, cupboard or picture frame can really accentuate the room if you have gone for a country chic or global theme.

- Storage:
Bedrooms often become cluttered with personal effects, books and clothes. Try storing clothes and accessories that you don’t need for the current season away in a hidden space. You can also buy very affordable small bookshelves from discount stores that can hold all of your bedtime reading material. Space is quite often a dampening factor that can (in some cases) limit the sheer amount of bathroom layout ideas that one can play with. Too often, homemakers have to adopt the practical approach and utilize their space as efficiently as possible. However, even compact spaces can have design power.

Selecting the right pieces and designing the space like a jewel box can help transform a typical, tight space into something spectacular.
If you are lucky enough to rework internal walls and create a dynamic flow then you can start to veer away from ‘the practical’ layout and create something a bit more original and exciting.

Everyone has a demanding to-do list and this summer is the perfect time to get down to those DIY jobs that everyone has been benching. Sometimes, it’s the little things that can make a difference to a whole room. As switching out cabinetry hardware or painting a room can dramatically change a room, we’re applying this same tactic this week to the doorways of the house. Many of us think that doors are simply utilitarian but they can make a dramatic impact to the design of your space. Whether it’s a kitchen pantry door, a bathroom door or a door to the garden, doorways are a great opportunity to bring a stylish look to your home. Here are some great examples of stylish doors.

My favorite room in our home – the living room

Hi! I am new to daily decorator, but I love it here already. I was so excited when Tracy’s sister Jamie accepted my offer to write up a post for Tracy!
Tracy, I am so happy to see that you are getting better and thanks so much for letting me stop by!

We bought our house 4 years ago and it was one big yellow box, when we took over. We loved the location though, and the fact that the living room had 9 ft ceilings.

We began a big remodel in 2010. The kind where you poke a little at one corner of a piece of drywall only to find yourself “back-to-the-studs”, seemingly moments later
Here we had someone come in and frame for some new and bigger windows in the living room.

We also removed a window. Here is my handy husband hard at work framing in the hole left behind by a window we took out to get some wall space for a (faux) fireplace.

This is sort of a midway point just before the floor was put in. All the drywall is back up.

After the big remodel was finished, dh and I installed a long row of cabinets to use as an entertainment unit. We used inexpensive cabinets from IKEA.

Hey, that’s me!
Then we built a little wall bump-out. Or is it a bump-in? You decide
We used all non-combustible material for this part. We further lined the inside with cement backer-board.

Then we had someone come in and tile it. In hindsight I could probably just have done that myself. We used an ethanol insert in our “fire place”. I call it my “Oil lamp +”

I found the mirror above the fireplace at a Home Goods and changed the hardware on the back so I could hang it on the side, for a bit more unexpected quatre-foil look.

My son B (11) and I took an art class all of last year and we have been filling our walls with our drawings and paintings. B drew the frog on the lower right.

As much as I love the design of our living room, the reason it is my favorite room is because it is where our whole family – all three of us – sit and talk about our day or watch our favorite shows together at night. I love that!
You can read more about our remodel and diy projects here.
Thanks so much again Tracy and continue to feel better. More good vibes coming your way
There is something about stripes that puts me in a cheerful mood and summer & stripes seem to go hand in hand. Here are some stripes that caught my eye.

{Message from Tracy…I’m doing well and beginning to get daily decorator back up & running. In the meantime, I am pleased to welcome Benita of Chez Larsson today. Benita has agreed to donate a post to daily decorator while I get back on my feet. Thanks Benita! I am a big fan & so grateful. I would also like to thank my sister Jamie who came up with this great idea.}
So here is Benita sharing some of her favorite spots in her home.

That up there is me in my bathroom. It’s the first time ever that I’ve had a bathroom where I’ve had a say. Previous bathrooms have been decorated by previous owners but this one’s all me. Me, me, me! After two years I’m still in love with the clean all white look of the subway tiles and accessories.

Another favorite spot in my house is actually the whole of the first floor in my house. It’s open plan and I love that there’s so much light there and that all the functions are present, lounging, working, dining and cooking.

Again there’s a lot of white but with my favorite colors green and navy to add some interest on fluffy pillows and art. Grey sheep skins and off white throws warm the place up. It’s chilly over here in Sweden for most part of the year!
These are my favorite spots.
Get well soon Tracy and thank you so much Jamie (what a great sister you are!) for having me!
