    performance tip: if you must grow a vector in a loop, make sure there's only one reference to it so that R doesn't have to make a copy on each iteration. # 6 seconds: x <- integer() for(i in 1:5e4) x <- c(x, i) # 0.02 seconds: x <- integer() for(i in 1:5e4) x[i] <- i

    My new favorite (and probably overused) party trick is to use knitr::include_url("link_to_my_own_slides") to show a past/future slide FROM THE SAME slide deck in another slide 🤯 Makes it easier to show how to do side-by-side code/plot slides.

    🎄3 in 1 🎄 praise is a great 📦 for brightening up an day ☀️ rep(praise, 5) only gives us one type of praise - it evaluates before repeating. replicate(5, praise) gives us 5 different types of praise - it re-evaluates each time 🤫 secretly it's sapply 🤫

    Monday morning hot take - I find opinionated style guides to be a much easier way for me to get up to speed on new languages than reference materials, language specs, or tutorials. Eg, The tidyverse style guide for R

    Do you use readxl? Now is a good time to test drive the dev version on GitHub; it goes to CRAN soon. I’m also on the hunt for public spreadsheets that are large enough to test and justify a readxl progress indicator. Suggestions?

    “There’s already 20 million people who can build software - isn’t that enough?” No. Until making your own software is as accessible as writing your own book, we’re not there yet. Not everyone can (or wants to) write a great book, but most have the baseline skills to try.
