  4. random side note: self-care as incredibly important in this work. it's so easy to get in deep and feel like you're drowning.

  5. a5 mentoring others is hard, bc there is so much defensiveness. finding others who will work with you and listen is so important

  6. a5 i try to bring the lens of diversity to EVERY aspect of work. i want people to see the whiteness in every facet of the lib

  7. A4 dismantling whiteness in the profession is something i haven't thought too much about, rather dismantling whiteness in my lib

  8. A4 challenge people in power over and over and over and over. self reflect. share what i find. be uncomfortable. call ppl out.

  9. almost like, my being privileged and white is my charge to do heavy lifting.

  10. A3 one thing i try to do with my white privilege is to use my whiteness as protection to bring up hard convos and call ppl out

  11. A3 language is one great example--i refuse to speak the mgmt speak. language can be a tool of violence and oppression.

  12. a3 i actively try to not perform whiteness, but that also requires me to be actively reflecting and dismantling my socialization

  13. A2 and the fact that the vast majority of staff are white, and challenges to dismantle white supremacy r met with such defense

  14. A2 it's obvious in the culture of the organization. large govt bureaocracy, white savior mentality, use of mgmt-speak...

  15. A1 otherwise we are bringing in people of color and allowing the racism in our system to go unchecked (2/2)

  16. A1 Diversity in hiring is great, but it's not the solution. We need to radically dismantle racism in our institution (1/2)

  17. I feel it's not overly effective, bc it does not address systemic racism inherent in a huge govt lib organization

  18. Diversity initiatives at my library are focused almost on hiring right now, which is problematic.
