Watch a Conservator at Work: Southeast Asian Art

The Walters recently received a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to perform the cleaning and treatment of several objects from the Doris Duke Collection of Southeast Asian Art. This collection, comprised of a variety of beautiful and unique pieces, has been in storage for some time, and many pieces require treatment. Visitors can interact with conservators as they work on this collection in the Special Exhibition Gallery.

Walk, Wonder, and Create Family Tour: Travel and Explore (Morning Session)

Join us for an international gallery tour as we visit Asia, Europe, and Africa! We will hop from place to place exploring artwork from many cultures. For children ages 6–8 years old and their favorite adults, this once-a-month, 60-minutes experience allows families to enjoy an interactive tour of the Walters’ collection, followed by an opportunity to create artwork related to our monthly theme.

Art Tots Program: Travel and Explore

Learning is fun at the Walters for children 2–3 years old and their favorite adults. Each Art Tots class will introduce toddlers to art and the museum through age-appropriate short stories, gallery play activities, and an art activity. Toddler workshops are 60-minutes in length and led by specially trained museum educators.

ART/SOUND/NOW: Wendel Patrick and Mark Brown & Carrie Fucile

Musician and producer Wendel Patrick will use turntables, electronics, and keyboards to explore lineage, power, conquest, and their relationship to ancient Greek and Roman religion. Intermedia artists Mark Brown and Carrie Fucile will use common, modern materials—including piles of bricks and desk fans—as the instruments that help audiences experience the Dutch Age of Exploration in the 1600s.

Waste Not: The Art of Medieval Recycling

Explore discoveries within the Walters’ collection that reveal the varieties of reuse and the techniques used to transform the old into the new. Waste Not: The Art of Medieval Recycling includes more than 20 objects and examines medieval approaches to recycling through the media of gold, ivory, stone, glass and parchment.

Gallery Drawing Family Workshop: Human Form

Participants will have an opportunity to think creatively and express their personal voices while drawing in the galleries. This family-oriented workshop is designed for children 9–13 years old and their favorite adults to enjoy together.

Walk-In Tour: The Chamber of Art and Wonders

Journey back to the 17th century, as you marvel at one of the most unique and popular galleries in the museum. The Chamber of Art and Wonders replicates a collector’s home, complete with artworks and natural wonders from around the world. You will be fascinated as you examine the paintings, sculptures, animals, insects, and shells that fill this amazing space!
