Forge Publishing & Daily Paintings
by Joel on April 25, 2016 at 7:15 pmApril has been a very busy month! Client and commission work has dominated my studio time but I am finally ready to announce a project that I have been working towards for over a year.

I am starting a publishing company! It should be no surprise that I like looking at art as much as I like making it. I have always been an avid collector of art books from films. Over the last few years that collection has grown to include books from the many artists that I admire. There is something fantastic about holding a bundle of your favorite art in your lap. Forge Publishing will focus on creating beautiful, independent, creator owned art books.
I am absolutely thrilled to announce that the first book in production will be Daily Paintings by Piper Thibodeau. If you’re not familiar with Piper’s work, I suggest you pop by her Tumblr page to see just a sample of over 1200 daily paintings that she has been creating since 2012! Piper and I have been planning her book for quite some time and we are getting really close to launching the Kickstarter.
To keep up to date on the development Piper’s new book and be among the first to know when the Daily Paintings Kickstarter goes live and take advantage of early backer rewards head over to ForgePublishing.com and sign up for the newsletter.

Interview With Dalhousie Gazette
by Joel on January 26, 2016 at 11:08 amLast week I was interviewed by Sabina Wex from the Dalhousie Gazette reflecting on the one year anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attacks in France. Sabina spoke with myself and Chronicle Herald cartoonist Bruce MacKinnon about our thoughts on Charlie Hebdo and free speech in cartooning.

StarcrossedOnline.com
“You’re almost speechless for the first week [after hearing about Charlie Hebdo]. I really didn’t know how to process the whole idea. And you do some digging on the internet, you try to figure out: what crazy, offensive line did they cross? What left-wing cartoon brought down the hammer? Then when you find out that it was nothing of any real consequences, it’s just that this particular extremist view of Islam forbids the depiction of the Prophet Muhammed, and you’re like, that’s it?” – Joel Duggan
I was flattered to get the call for the interview. And, I have to confess, Bruce MacKinnon has been a cartooning hero of mine since I was aware that you could draw pictures for a living. So, seeing Starcrossed strips in the same article as some of his award winning political cartoons from The Chronicle Herald was a thrill. As it turns out, a lot of our thoughts on free speech in cartooning overlap.
If you’re not familiar with Bruce’s work, you can find more of it on his Facebook page.

Comics Coast to Coast 255 – Jake Parker
by Joel on November 18, 2015 at 10:22 am
Stories. Ultimately that’s what any comic artist is trying to do, tell stories. Jake Parker has been working on Skyheart in one way or another for over ten years. He has helped companies like Blue Sky and Marvel tell their stories. He has told other stories of his own. Along the way he has helped other artists develop their stories. Now it’s time for Skyheart to take center stage. Jake joins us on Comics Coast to Coast to talk about his story.
Jake’s work has always been an inspiration. I recently picked up his sketchbook, Drawings II, an amazing peek directly into his daily sketches and development ideas. It’s unapologetically a sketch book, as it should be. Even there you can see stories budding and world building being explored.
With a successful Kickstarter track record, Jake is poised to create something really special with Skyheart.

Comics Coast to Coast 250 – Skottie Young
by Joel on October 5, 2015 at 3:29 pm250 episodes of Comics Coast to Coast. Holy crap! I can now say with authority that I have been co-hosting and co-producing Comics Coast to Coast longer than I have not been. It’s a peculiar feeling to look back and think about my days brainstorming ideas and characters for Starcrossed while listening to then hosts Brian, John and Justin interview their favourite comic creators. I have been able to do the same since 2011.
I won’t get into a list of my favourite past interviews for fear of leaving someone out. One thing is for sure, it has been through Comics Coast to Coast that I have been able to speak to – to actually interview – some of my comic creating heroes. Last week I had the pleasure of crossing another name off of that list. Skottie Young!
I first started following Skottie’s work when my buddy Paton put a Human Torch comic book in my hand and said, “You need to check this out.” Skottie’s work immediately spoke to the cartoonist in me battling with wanting to draw main stream comic characters but not really jiving with the more traditional approach. Skottie’s work (And work ethic. The man is a machine.) has been a huge influence on my artistic career. Fast forward ten-plus years later and Skottie’s evolved, whimsical work is everywhere. Chances are you’ve seen his brush tackle your favourite 80’s childhood, Harry Potter, or Giant-Sized Little Marvel character.
Getting to interview Skottie was amazing.

On October 14th, Skottie is launching his first creator owned book, I Hate Fairyland. I’ll let him tell you all about it in the interview. All I can say is put the kids to bed, cover your nuts and bring a mop. I think Gert is going to take us all for rough ride through many fairytale misadventures.
