TRAVEL JOURNAL: COSTA RICA

There’s never been a better time to travel. The dollar is stronger, the flights are easier, the concept of luxury is actually within reach and (I’ll go ahead and say it) the President-elect of the United States is making some of us want to board the next flight out of this place. The only question is: where to first?

With a wealth of direct flights from major American hubs, Costa Rica has always been an attractive destination for travelers as much for its geographic diversity—beaches, volcanoes, and rainforests—as for its tropical vibe and comparative affordability. A destination with plentiful surprises at every turn. I had to check it off my list.

ANDAZ PAPAGAYO

The Andaz property (in the exclusive Papagayo Peninsula) feels like an organic reflection of its surroundings with its earthy wooden touches, its wide open spaces and its tranquil nooks and crannies that let you take in the beauty of the Bay of Culebra. Above all, the property boasts a sense of place, with notable décor, amenities and of course, standout dining options. After a day or two, the country’s “Pura Vida” catchphrase (which means “chill out”) becomes second nature.

Rooms are spacious and airy without incomprehensible design features hijacking the comfort of the space.

A MESSAGE OF LOVE

Salvation Mountain is a visionary environment covering a hill in the Colorado Desert in Imperial County, California. The artwork is made from adobe, straw, and thousands of gallons of lead-free paint. It was created by local resident Leonard Knight and it encompasses numerous murals and areas painted with Christian sayings and Bible verses. Its philosophy was built around the Sinner’s Prayer.

This unique and visionary sculpture is considered a national treasure by many. Both profoundly strange and beautifully accessible, it is worthy of the international acclaim it receives. Coldplay thought so. The British rock band filmed a music video there for their song “Birds” off their seventh studio album A Head Full Of Dreams. The accompanying booklet also features a photo of the band atop of Salvation Mountain.

It was also Leonard’s hope that his message of LOVE will be seen all over the world and that all people everywhere will show more love and compassion for their fellow man. He truly believed that love was the answer to a peaceful and harmonious existence. And it is. That is something we can all agree on, especially in times like these.
