The year 2019 is already coming to an end - it feels like yesterday when I wrote the first summaries for The Division 2 betas - how time flies.
But with the end of the year, it has also become a tradition in this part of the internet to use the Xmas break to look back and especially ahead towards the next year.
This year has been a very intense one. Launch of The Division 2 - the first expansions and the ups and downs that are natural for titles that evolve and change over time. Title Update 6 introduced many changes that have been brought up by the community - and this was by far not the end. As announced in the last State of the Game - there will not only be a UI overhaul, but also core changes to the RPG system down the road.
The State of the Game will return in the normal weekly schedule on Wednesday, January 8th, 2020 where they will talk about Episode 3 as well as provide you with a State of the Game roadmap for the January period.
The game is technically an RPG, but also a cover shooter, yet neither at the same time. Why? Because nearly all content can be steamrolled with good Cluster mine builds or gun builds like Clutch that don't even need cover most of the time.
The only real "RPG" aspect right now is that we have stats, but all we can really do with them is just optimize how much damage we put out.
Most MMOs and in turn RPGs focus on 3 core mechanics, the "Trifecta" of Healer, DPS, and Tank. Even Division 1 had that, and although most builds leaned towards the DPS role, content was usually more fun, fluid, and cooperative when at least 2 of the 3 roles were present.
Note: I'm not saying we need ALL content to be based around the Trifecta, but as it stands right now, all people do is make the best, highest damage, highest self sustain builds, and everyone just copies that. It's boring.
Right now we only have DPS roles, and DPS that can self heal. While both of those are perfectly fine for solo content, there are very few if any reasons to play anything else in group content either. I'd really like to see that change.
Tanking is not a thing whatsoever right now, as aggro is a hidden mechanic that we have no control over, unlike Division 1.
Healing is possible, and there are talents that help heal, but it's generally pointless since people can self heal, or simply kill everything before it damages them. Having a healer means lowering your team DPS, and that's bad.
Buffing is only possible in by synergizing talents with skills like Pulse and spotter, or using Gear sets like 4p Aces.
