Design strategist and storyteller Roya Ramezani did not feel gender issues in the tech industry before she started working in Silicon Valley—where she found herself in a male-dominated environment in which women were not communicating their ideas. In contrast to the statistics, she joined a diverse team. After a month, however, she discovered something that changed everything: Even when they were equal number as men in the room, women weren’t contributing to the discussions equally. They were being quiet, and she thought of them as “not being present in the meeting room.” Roya’s thesis, entitled Exponent: Amplifying the Female Voices in Tech Discourse, attempts to address these issues using product design, service design design, and platform design.
Wondering if the MFA in Products of Design program might be right for you? Most prospective students, professionals, journalists, and recruiters taking a look at our program have a lot of questions about what makes it different. They want to know who it attracts, what the curriculum and experience are like, and what our students do after they graduate. So we put together a list of the program's 14 key ingredients.
Mission
Beyond Industrial Design — Products of Design is the most multi-disciplinary design program imaginable.
Mission
Beyond Industrial Design — Products of Design is the most multi-disciplinary design program imaginable.
Designers aren’t in the artifact business anymore, they’re in the consequence business. In order for design to transform the world, designers need to transform themselves into multi-disciplinary masters. The contemporary design challenge of production and consumption demands new approaches to industrial-age methodologies and orthodoxies. What we consider the “products of design” are expanding beyond the industrial design, mass-produced object. They now encompass sets of instructions, critical design, interventions, narratives, interactions, experiences, and speculative possibilities—all aimed at creating social, environmental, and technological value that catalyzes positive change.

Conventional wisdom tells us that eco-anxiety—an indirect mental health impact of climate change—is preventing us from effectively responding to the threat of climate change. This form of anxiety is also marked by an existential worry about the future for oneself, children, and later generations. Karen Vellensky challenges this idea through her thesis, Good Grief: Inducing eco-anxiety as a call to climate action.
We are delighted to announce our Visiting Lecture Series lineup for the Fall 2017 season. Read more below about Chelsea Maudlin, George Aye, Andrea Steele, and Laura Forlano below!
Will Lentz master’s thesis Eating Together: Explorations in an Anti-Social Food System promotes a resurgence in the social value of communal eating experiences. In a time when isolation and independence are increasingly common, Lentz offers products and provocations aimed at bringing people back together over food.
Andrea Cameron’s master’s thesis, Playing with Firebrands, explores student agency in education. Inspired by the work of progressive educators and student-centered design, the motivation was to incorporate principles from progressive education into public education. The objective was to take the best practices in privatized education and make them accessible to public schools.

Curriculum
Learn about the courses, seminars, workshops and intensives.
Shorter, more intensive courses, mixed with a "no grades" policy translates into maximum risk and an optimized use of time, attention, and resources.
Making
Making grounds design and designers. In the Making track, students investigate multiple dimensions of physical design practice, its processes, and the tools that inform it. In Making, we deepen the connection to craft and the materials, tools, manufacturing processes, and energy flows that underwrite it. We ground making in both the personal delight of the maker and the commercial, production, brand, and experiential possibilities that guide it.
Located on steps away from Products of Design is the new Visible Futures Lab. PoD students have priority access to the VFL; mix of a woodworking and machine shop, a rapid prototyping lab, an electronics lab, sewing & soft lab and gallery all in one space. The VLF is a state-of-the-art Maker Space featuring the latest tools for digital fabrication (see complete list of equipment here).
Structures
Structures inform practice. In the Structures track, students are immersed in the information and business structures that make effective design possible: research, systems thinking, strategy, user experience and interaction/information design. The Structures track gives students a capacity to put design in experiential, social, business and economic contexts.
Narratives
Design demands stories. At every step, the story of the design and its animating ideas must be made compelling through drawing, graphic representation, videography, history, writing, and point of view. In the Narratives track, students explore the storytelling dimension of design necessary throughout the design process—from idea to market.

During the summer of 2016, Julia worked for Common Cents Lab, where she studied behavioral economics, conducted original research, and worked with a team to develop products aimed at improving the financial well-being of low and middle income Americans. Julia is fascinated by behavioral science, organizational development, and win-win strategies, and believes in working across design disciplines to facilitate collaboration, envision alternative systems, and encourage prosocial behavior.

Isioma is a former molecular biology student interested in exploring design as it relates to psychology, art, culture, and the environment. She is fascinated by everything from forests to construction sites, from science fiction to climate change; and is inspired by the micro- and macro- systems which dictate the ways in which people inhabit and create their spaces. When not in the studio, Isioma may be found on nature walks, dreaming up soundscapes, concocting herbal remedies and perfumes for her unwitting (but grateful?) friends, and indulging her newfound passion for surrealist photo shoots.

Originally from Syosset, NY, Souvik graduated from Harvard College in 2011, majoring in Social Studies—an interdisciplinary major that drew on the intellectual traditions of several different social sciences including government, economics, and sociology—as a way to understand and solve complex societal problems. His undergraduate thesis sought to use the India-Pakistan relationship as a lens through which to reconcile the neo-realist and constructivist schools of thought within international relations theory. A spring class at the Harvard Graduate School of Design opened Souvik’s eyes to the world of design. He hopes to explore the areas of medicine, technology, and a combination of the two through his design work. In the three years that intervened between college and SVA PoD, Souvik worked as a trader at JPMorgan. He loves to travel, to (break)dance, to eat, and to read comic books.
