China is a great place to cross paths with architects from all over the world, even if these encounters happen in the desert of Inner-Mongolia. Back in 2008, as part of the Ai Weiwei / Herzog & de Meuron -instigated Ordos100 project, MovingCities had the opportunity to interview Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena [Elemental] about his design for a 1,000 square meter villa for low-budget billionaires in Ordos 鄂尔多斯, China.

Earlier this month, Alejandro Aravena was announced the winner of the 2016 Pritzker Prize. A good excuse for us to send our congratulations, dive into our archive and, for the first time, publish the edited version from our 2008 double-interview.

Earlier this month, MovingCities flew from Shanghai 上海 to Shenzhen 深圳.
In the past we have contextualized our aerophotography adventures by introducting a 24-year old Portuguese priest making real airplanes (from real paper) in 1709 (here) or discussed the relation between aerophotography and the work German apothecary Julius Neubronner [1852-1932] (here). This time around, we an introduce A. F. Mozhaisky [1825-1890] – an admiral in the Imperial Russian Navy, aviation pioneer, researcher and designer of heavier-than-air craft (source).

As part of the upcoming Shanghai International Literary Festival 2015 [ programme writers tickets ] MovingCities will conduct a writing workshop, called “Paper skylines, a Shanghai workshop” on Friday November 6, 2015, from 3-5 pm at M on the Bund in Shanghai 上海.
Other writers, architects and scholars invited for the Shanghai International Literary Festival 2015 include WAI Architecture Think Tank, Michael Meyer, Matjaž Tančič, a North Korea Panel of Specialists: From The Outside Looking In and the outcome of the That’s Shanghai: Erotic Fiction Competition.

The Colours of…. | Birkhäuser publication

The Colours Of.... | Birkhäuser, 2015

Recently, Birkhäuser published “The Colours of…“, a 376-page publication, including 250 color illustrations – by Iwan Baan, Christian Richters, Roland Halbe and Philippe Ruault -, described as a specifier of material, substance, light, texture, form and colour – and in the end of human emotion. […] Color is inextricably linked with architecture; as a design element and also as an inherent quality, it characterizes the shape and texture of the built fabric.
Highlighting the work of Frank O. Gehry, Jean Nouvel, Wang Shu and a handfull of other well-known architects, MovingCities contributed to “The Colours of…” with a 3,000 word essay – called Wang Shu, Translating tradition for modern times. Order here, GoogleBooks there and preview after the break.

NAAM – New Architecture Assembly Magazine – is a bilingual Farsi/English architecture and design magazine edited and published by the architecture students at University of Tehran (Iran). Contributing to its most recent issue – now fully available on ISSUU – and centered around the theme of ‘On the Edge of Architecture’, MovingCities wrote a piece dealing with the transformation of Shanghai 上海 called “A Fantasy on the Fringe of the Future“.

Throughout the past decade, Portuguese artist VHILS – born Alexandre Farto [Lisbon, 1987] – has been making a name for himself by taking apart and reassembling found objects. He uses a multitude of materials and formats to voice his stance on the city, which he bases on his experience of living and working in Shanghai 上海, Moscow, New York, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro and Paris. VHILS now condenses his findings in his home town Lisbon, drawing from his work to produce a collective memory of the city.
