Dealing with Differences in a Diverse World

November 14, 2016 By Julie Sanders

We live in a world full of differences, where our paths are interwoven on a palette of diversity. Faith gives us a framework for how to respond. Just this last weekend, I was caught unaware by a plea for help from someone whose differences also made me feel unprepared. What one thing should we remember when dealing with differences in a diverse world?

“If you love your neighbor, you will fulfill the requirements of God’s law. For the commandments say, ‘You must not commit adultery. You must not murder. You must not steal. You must not covet.’ These—and other such commandments—are summed up in this one commandment: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law.

This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is almost gone; the day of salvation will soon be here. So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the shining armor of right living. (Romans 13:8a-12, NLT)

Trust & Refresh for parents of children with special needs (book review)

Trust & Refresh for parents of children with special needs (book review)

In addition to my own two nearly grown children, I'm in the business of caring for children. God has given me the opportunity to influence the learning and well-being of hundreds of children and their parents. It's not an easy day to be a parent raising little ones in a day of great uncertainty. Many parents face added needs in raising children with special needs. Today is a good time to know we trust in God. This week I shared about Election Day and empowering, enduring truths for moms on The MOM Initiative. "As generations pass the baton of stewardship on election day, we teach our children how to choose and follow leaders.  The … Read More...

Life Creative: Inspired, artistic Mothering

Life Creative: Inspired, artistic Mothering

"There are seasons when it simply isn't possible to pull away to feed the artist confined inside. But take heart, the pendulum of the clock always swings back again."  Living out Life Creative is part of living as the woman God made me to be. In fact, I would say one of the essential threads of womanhood is that of creativity expressed in some form or a few. When Wendi Speake and Kelli Stuart shared about their upcoming book project they were authoring together, I thought it sounded like a great book for young moms who might feel like their expressive, artistic, innovative side was put on hold for motherhood. And it is.  Life Creative: … Read More...

How to have a prayer life in a busy life

How to have a prayer life in a busy life

I haven't watched the news in a while. A busy life and toxic talk in the headlines turned me away. In an effort to stay connected to the world we live in, I pulled up current news websites this weekend to see 3 Attacks on US Soil in New Jersey, New York and Minnesota. Life is full of conflict and confusion, and people are hurting. We may be too busy to tune in to the news every day, but we can never be too busy to tune in to the power of prayer. We can have a prayer life in a busy life. Since my days changed with a new job nine months ago, I've taken a fresh look at my exercise of prayer. Giving up on this spiritual lifeline is not an … Read More...

I thought you’d never ask. Do we dare pray for it?

I thought you’d never ask. Do we dare pray for it?

I would never ask. I've never wanted it. I've done my fair share of trying to resist it, escape it, and overcome it. Mostly, I ask for God to take it away. I'm can't honestly say I've given thanks for it. But it's good for me, so God sometimes chooses to give it. Are you in the middle of pain you didn't ask for? C.S.Lewis said that, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." And it's His megaphone to rouse me. Do you listen for God when you're in pain? When you're alone do you lean in hard in hopes of hearing Him speak as your companion? When you're … Read More...
