We’ve all felt them – the Monday blues.  Today I hope to chase them away with these beautiful blue pieces.  Taking a cue from Riverside, Pantone’s #1 Fall/Winter 2016/2017 hue, I’ve put together a cool blue collection, with everything from jeans to a lacy dress.  Blue goes with so many other colors; it also pairs well with varying shades of itself.  Not every color can claim that!

I know I’ve touted my love for burgundy this season, but I probably have at least as many blue pieces in my closet.  I have almost as many little blue dresses as LBDs.  Their versatility is the reason, and perhaps because they’re more flattering to my skin tone, possibly to yours as well.

Monochromatic

I love a monochromatic look.  I remember watching the TV show Dynasty years ago.  Linda Evans as Krystle Carrington always looked so chic and stunning in a monochrome outfit.  Her classic look was often a loose blouse, a tailored skirt or pants and a belt, all in the same color.  The look was finished with coordinating pumps – a matching color for pants or nude for the skirt.  A head-to-toe single-color look will instantly help you look longer and leaner.  Bring it on!

Inspired by that idea, I wanted to try it with a more casual feel and in burgundy.  Have you noticed it’s one of my favorite colors lately?  😉  It’s so warm and rich and flattering to most skin tones.  Whether it’s called Burgundy, Merlot, Zinfandel or good old maroon, it’s still fabulous.  If you like red tones but don’t want to wear something that bright, isn’t this a great choice?

When I put this together inside, it was a wonderful combination of deep red hues.  Unfortunately the pants didn’t photograph as deep in color as the rest of the outfit.  They are a lighter-weight fabric (actually a summer weave) which may have contributed to the color issue.  Live and learn.  I’ve linked better pants choices if you’d like to put together a similar ensemble.  🙂

I think I’ll try other monochromatic looks here soon.  I’m not giving up because of the “miss” above.  The siren song of longer and leaner is too tempting to deny.

Red Boots

Why did I wait so long to buy these red Hunter boots?  I’ve wanted them since I first saw them a couple of years ago.  They’re so fun and happy, and boy does that red pop!  I’ll buy things on a whim, so why do I sometimes agonize over buying something I really want?  I’m sure there’s a psychological study in there somewhere.  Regardless, I finally pulled the trigger and bought them. (Insert celebration emoji)

Two of my daughters have Hunter rain boots, both in black I think.  In fact, I borrowed a pair from one of the girls to show them here.  But this red gloss pair has been on my mind for some time.  I know they’re not as versatile as black, but I couldn’t help myself.

Regarding the delayed purchased, maybe I held off because the color is so specific.  Perhaps it’s because we get so little rain here.  In fact, rain is such a rare event, you’ll see people standing in their doorways staring and listening with wonder as the rain falls.  In this La Nina year we’re having more rain than normal, so I may get the opportunity to wear them a few times this season.  If not, I’ll get my money’s worth styling them here!  🙂

New Year’s Resolutions

So here we are in a brand new year. To be honest, 2016 went by so quickly. I’ve included a couple of pictures of two of my granddaughters with thier great-grandparents (my mom and Andy’s dad) to emphasize that point.  Time goes by so quickly, doesn’t it?!

As I shared in my post on the last day of last year, 2016 was certainly a year of ups and downs for me. Although the lows are tough to walk through, they certainly cause me to appreciate the highs. This year those highs included some great time with family, the engagement of my youngest daughter, and a new granddaughter. Let the spoiling begin!

I always find the beginning of the year so interesting.  It’s just another day, and yet it’s also another year and therefore a clean slate.  In truth, we can hit “reset” whenever we want, but we do it collectively on January 1.  We write down our New Year’s Resolutions and prepare for the major changes coming our way.

I’m sure I mentioned the best New Year’s Resolution I’ve ever heard.  First, my apologies to my Aunt Margie and Uncle Joe who hate the word I’m about to use.  It, and the resolution, came from my brother.  He started the year saying he was not going to suck at life. What a simple goal.  Not necessarily easy, but oh, so simple.  The idea is, whenever you’re faced with an option or a decision, choose the one where you don’t suck at life.  Choose the one that’s more fun, more fulfilling, creates more memories, enriches your life in some way.  That’s quite a Litmus test.

I think I need to clarify.  This doesn’t mean the option I choose is the one where I party the hardest or seek the hedonistic and irresponsible option.  Sometimes “not sucking” means not making an unwise move.  In the decision to save money or not, clearly saving is the wiser, “non-sucking” choice.  In the decision to watch TV or take a walk, I should probably choose walking more often than not.  It’s not about situational ethics, but it may be about situational decisions.

There are a lot of things I plan to improve this year.  I realize plans need to have quantifiable goals in order to measure my progress.  I can do that.  So can you.  To me, those aren’t resolutions; those are personal and business decisions that may or may not be made at the beginning of the year.  They may or may not need adjustment here or there. If you have anything you want to accomplish, you should be moving toward something measurable.  For example, rather than saying, “I want to lose weight this year,” I would say, “I want to fit comfortably into a Size X” or “I want to weigh Y lbs by March 1.  It’s a quantifiable goal.  I can measure my progress.

This year, I’m taking the different approach.  Rather than burdening myself with a long list of resolutions, I’m taking the cue from my brother.  I’m not going to suck at life.  How about you?

Best of 2016

Well, 2016 has been quite a year! From knee surgery and losing my buddy, my yellow lab Charlie, to new grandbabies (one here and one on the way) and the engagement of my youngest daughter, we’ve run the gamut of emotions.  The year started rough but fortunately ended well.  Through it all I’ve plugged along on this little blog and you’ve been so kind to read along and support me.  I can’t tell you how much it’s meant to me!

I’ve rounded up several of my favorite looks from this past year, my best of 2016.  Some things are sold out (sorry).  Where possible I’ve linked substitutes below.  Some may give you inspiration to put together things already in your closet for a fresh approach.

I hope this next year brings you love and prosperity, blessings and happiness, joy and hope.  I’d love to hear how your year is going.  I’d also love to field your questions, whether they’re about finance, fashion, or how I can help you reach your investment goals.  My goal with this blog has always been to engage women in those areas where we all have questions.  Sometimes it’s clothes, sometimes diet, sometimes money – is there any shortage of questions and challenges in our lives?  I’m no expert, but I’ve always felt discussion and communication makes all the difference, and that’s why I’m here.

Scarf

There is nothing like a gorgeous scarf to change the mood of an outfit.  I wore this beautiful burgundy tunic here, where it was the star.  Now I add this beautiful accessory and you hardly notice the sweater.  The scarf’s print is so eye-catching everything else fades into the background.  The takeaway from this is pretty evident:  if you want to change a look, or if you’re tired of “the same old top”, add a scarf.  What an easy way to revive an outfit.

I can’t say it’s a low cost accessory.  We’ve all seen scarves in the several-hundred-dollar range.   But if you put together a look of basic separates and feel it’s missing that certain spark, try adding some lovely accent colors around your neck.  Silk, like my example above, drapes beautifully and spans most seasons.  Knits and wool weaves are wonderfully cozy this time of year.  All can be found in any color imaginable, and in an infinite number of patterns. The ways to wrap and tie a scarf are almost as limitless.  You can truly make anything old seem new again!

Cozy Grey

Well, the hustle and bustle of Christmas is now a memory.  Yes, there are the after-Christmas sales,  but the busy-ness is finally ebbing.  I don’t know about you, but I ate like each meal was my last.  I’m working my way back to normal, healthy eating habits and my exercise routine.  Right before Christmas I got hit with a nasty cold that sidelined me a bit so I was already off my game when holiday foods began to arrive.  Now it’s time to get back to normalcy!

Today’s look is all about this comfy grey-striped sweatshirt and jeans.  When I stayed with my daughter before the birth of baby Indiana I left my hang-up clothes hanging in my office.  Bummer.  I needed a couple tops for the week so I made a quick trip to Target and found this easy sweatshirt.  It came in so handy at the hospital, especially when I spent a night sleeping in a chair.  Comfort was paramount.  Once home I was able to style it up a notch with a hat and OTK boots, proving those two accessories can dress up just about anything.

This may be the first Boho-style top I’ve ever worn.  I’m not sure why that is.  I love the prints and the flowing fabric, especially when the primary color is burgundy.  It’s no secret it’s one of my favorite hues.  How perfect are these easy prints over jeans?  It’s as if they were made to go together.  I added a lot of solid burgundy accessories (as in everything) but I think it works because the top is a print.  Honestly, I’m looking for every reason to wear these OTK boots.  I just love them!  By the way, almost everything I’ve linked here is on sale!

I’m so excited Christmas is almost here.  The weather has finally cooled off, despite my lack of jacket here, so it really feels like winter. It will always feel more like Christmas to me when I’m in snow, but that isn’t going to happen in the Southwest.  I’ll just smile and enjoy whatever weather we get.

The things most important to me in this season are Jesus and family.  I’m so happy to have family coming to town.  We’ve got fun plans throughout the weekend, starting with a birthday party for my granddaughter tonight.  Always happy to spend time with family.

Money Monday – Leather Weather and Tax Planning

One of the things I enjoy about cold weather is leather.  (You’ve probably noticed that already.)  With a sleek sweater and heels, a leather skirt works perfectly at work.  I like that it gives me a bit of an edgy look without going overboard about it.  Just remember, it’s easy to miss the mark with leather: if you plan to wear it to the office, keep it simple and keep the length modest.  You can move from chic to cheap in a matter of a couple inches.  However, with an appropriate style I wouldn’t hesitate to make leather an office look.

Speaking of the office, we’re getting close to the end of the year.  That means there is still a small amount of time for last-minute tax planning, especially if you have income that changes from year to year.  Take a look at your business profit and loss statement.  Your profit shouldn’t be a surprise. (If it is, I know a great CPA who can help you.  🙂 )  If you find your profit is higher than expected and you’re looking to drive down taxable income, there are still some things you can do to help achieve that goal.

If you own your own business, do you have business expenses you can pay before the end of the year?  If cash flow allows, pay them now.  If you need a new computer or printer, or possibly a larger piece of equipment, consider buying it now.  You’ll need to place that equipment into service (i.e., use it) before the end of the year to take a deduction for it.

If you file your tax returns on the cash basis as most small businesses do, can you hold off invoicing for services you performed until January?  If you receive payment for services, holding checks on your desk until January doesn’t count.  The tax law has a rule of “constructive receipt,” meaning if you have the money or could get the money (your customer asks you to swing by and pick up the check), just because you haven’t deposited it doesn’t allow you to keep it out of this year’s income.

There are also non-business strategies, such as making additional donations to qualifying charities or churches, prepaying the second half of your property taxes or making your January 1 mortgage payment before December 31st.  Be sure to make those payments with enough lead time to allow vendors and creditors to post your payments by year end.  It makes things cleaner if your donation receipt or mortgage statement show record of your payment in 2016.  Otherwise you may find yourself with a letter from the Internal Revenue Service telling you their records differ from the amounts you reported.  That’s never fun.

One of the best options you have, whether you’re a business owner or an employee, is to put money into a retirement account.  As a Certified Financial Planner® I’m all for that.  Depending on the type of account you use, you can either defer income now and let it grow tax-deferred until you begin withdrawing it (preferably not until retirement age) or you can contribute after tax money and watch it grow tax-free, paying no tax later when you withdraw it!

There are many retirement plans to choose from, and I’ll devote a separate blog post to them.  You can still get a 2016 deduction for some of them, even if you don’t make a contribution before the end of the year.  If you work for a company with an employer-sponsored retirement plan such as a 401(k) or SIMPLE IRA, you have to defer salary into it in 2016 in order to receive any tax benefits in 2016.  Check with your employer today to see if there are any last minute options to defer any salary into the plan.  If not, check out the upcoming post on retirement plans to find out what you can do if you missed out.
