NOTES
In this special episode, I chat with Sarah Reinhard and Lisa Hendey about their work on The Catholic Mom’s Prayer Companion: A Book of Daily Reflections.
We discuss some of the challenges all women face when it comes to making daily prayer a priority, as well some of the ways those challenges change as our roles change as wives and moms. We share some of our own difficulties this Advent season and ways we are doing our best to encourage and support one another during this busy — but meant to be prayerful — season.
I always love any opportunity to connect with Sarah and Lisa, and I hope you will enjoy our conversation.
Wishing you an abundance of peace and joy this Christmas! See you soon!

NOTES
In this (50th!) episode, we are talking about the Christmas Crazies and how to avoid them. In addition to recognizing that you are in control of many of the pressures you feel this time of year, I share some other ideas as well:
1) Keep some of your routines.
Daily routines and habits are part of how you and your family can find comfort and stay sane during crazy busy holiday celebrations.
2) Watch your sugar.
It’s just EVERYWHERE this time of year. You don’t have to say no to everything, but give some serious thought to the ways in which continually over-indulging in sugar makes you miserable in the long run.
3) Know when to say no.
You do not have to attend every event and send every gift and acrd just because you were invited to. Know your personal lists and your family’s limits, and do your best to respect them.
4) Make room for quiet.
Never more than this time of year, our souls crave quiet. Find yourself some in any creative way you can.
I also answer questions from listeners about how to handle Santa Claus and whether or not to take young kids to Midnight Mass. Let me know what you think!
INTERVIEW

INTERVIEW
This week we have a delightful conversation with Tiffany Walsh from Life of a Catholic Librarian. Tiffany shares some great thoughts on the ways in which she has grown and changed as woman through the years and how she has learned to become comfortable in her own skin. She also shares the “mistake” of over-worrying and trying to control too much in our lives and our family’s lives. Such a great perspective from a wise and thoughtful lady. You will love Tiffany! NOTES
This week we are talking about the ugly sin of JEALOUSY and all the ways it threatens to hurt our relationships and rob us of peace and joy in our lives. Women especially are vulnerable to this sin because we notice all the details about ourselves and others. Some steps I recommend to overcome jealously:
1. Discover why you are vulnerable.
What’s going on with you? Are you tired, stressed, feeling unappreciated? Get to the source of your current weakness and you can better avoid the temptation toward jealousy.
2. Find out what lie you are believing.
Do you feel unworthy? Do you believe God does not love you? Do you think that God can “run out” of love and blessings? Get to the heart of what false things you are believing about God and yourself in order to fix your perspective on the blessings God gives other people.
3. Address it.
Once you recognize jealousy, it’s important to address it. This can happen in confession, which is a great way to get the graces you need to overcome temptation. But this can also happen in heart-to-heart talks with a trusted friend or your husband. Acknowledge the sin of jealousy and you will take away some of its power over you. Also, we can address jealousy in our own spiritual lives by working directly against it, by praying for those we are tempted to be jealous of. This is a difficult practice, but well worth it in the benefits you can gain from it.

NOTES
I take my inspiration this week from a fun episode of Gretchen Rubin’s podcast, Happier. In the podcast (and in her books), Gretchen looks at 7 essential parts of life where, if we focus on making improvements, we can find greater happiness in our life and work.
In her recent show, Gretchen Rubin went through the 7 essentials and shared what improvements she might make in each of these areas. In this episode, I do the same, in the hopes of inspiring you to examine where in your life you can make some small changes and improvements to find greater happiness.
Here are the 7!
1. Eat and drink more healthfully.
2. Exercise regularly.
3. Save, spend, and earn wisely.
4. Rest, relax, and enjoy.
5. Stop procrastinating, make consistent progress.
6. Simplify, clear, and organize.
7. Engage more deeply—with other people, with God, with yourself, with the world.
Let me know what you are inspired to work on!
INTERVIEW

November 21st, 2016 I had the honor of speaking at the To the End of Love marriage conference in Jacksonville this past weekend.
I have heard from a number of couples in attendance requesting an outline of my talk or some notes they could use from it, so I am publishing my notes here. They aren’t fancy, but I hope they will serve to jog your memory about all that we shared over the weekend.
I have shared the notes in a Google doc. You can see them at this link.
Thank you for welcoming me to Jacksonville and for sharing your hearts with me!

NOTES
This week we are discussing the ways in which wounds and mistakes from our past threaten to harm us in the present and future. How can we let go of our past and make forward progress in our work and relationships? In what ways do past failures give us negative expectations for the future? How can we overcome our past so we can enjoy the present and build the future we want? I discuss 3 different aspects of our life that our past can affect:
1) Personal Relationships
We all bring baggage to our personal relationships and past wounds can set us up for insecurity and distrust.
2) Work
Whether your work is that of a full time parent or homemaking or a professional career, we all have goals for our work. In what ways might your past be holding you back from setting and achieving important goals in your work?
3) Spiritual Life
Sometimes, because of past sins, we hold on to a sense of guilt and unworthiness, even if we know our sins have been forgiven. Of course we need the sacrament of confession, but we also can take steps toward recognizing the limitlessness of God’s mercy and forgiveness.

NOTES
This week we are talking about working moms, and the balance of home life and professional life. This plays out in all different kinds of way sin different families, but I share some guiding principles for us to keep in mind when deciding these things and discussing the topic of working women.
First, I think it’s important to recognize that this is not a black and white, one size fits all topic. Every family is different, and we all need to prayerfully decide what works best for our families.
Second, Let us never say NEVER. Life has a way of throwing us curve balls and while you may think you will always work, or will always stay home with your young children, you may wind up facing different circumstances and making different choices in the future. That is okay. That’s life.
Third, I encourage women to put their motherhood first. What that means will vary form one person to the next, but our vocation is to motherhood, and we need to give that primacy over all other things. We will be happiest and most satisfied, whether we work full time, part time, or not at all, if we recognize the worth of that calling.
And finally, we note that we are blessed to live in times such as these, where families can prioritize their children and their needs while paying the bills, in many creative and innovative ways. Figure out what is best for you family, and the go do it!
