Suppose someone meets you in the street and asks, “how do you define success?”
What will be your answer? Will you be vague about it, telling whatever comes to your mind, or try to give it a good definition? Will your definition be one which is well versed and known by heart, or would it be totally unique?
Meanwhile, what would be your reaction? Will you consider the question as a brilliant and challenging one, which makes us think out of the conventional ways of thinking about success? Or will you consider it as ridiculous and weird, and be like ‘why should I define success? Everyone knows what success is!’
Well, I don’t want you to wait until the day someone does ask you to define success, so I will ask you myself, how do you define success? I’m also going to answer this question myself (I don’t want you to catch me unawares in the street!)…
There are a few fixed ways to define success, like it can be said that success cannot be defined by how much money you have, or that success at work only isn’t true success. But all these things are only partially true. For example, although money should never be made a top priority in life, money does matters to some extent. Most of us have an idea of how much we’d like to earn. Even though that won’t define success entirely, it does play a minor role in what or whom we consider as ‘successful’.
Similarly, simply being successful at work may not be total success. But what if your work is your passion, something you live for? Surely in that case your work becomes a major indicator of your success.
Now, a simple, easy and short definition for success would be that success is to be happy. It is being content with what you do and what you have, being satisfied about everything about and around you, and leading a happy life overall.
But happiness itself is also not easy to define. It can be one way for a person and the other way for another. What and all we can say for sure is that, happiness is when you are happy!
So I’ve come to believe that happiness as well as success have to be defined in terms of various factors. I think that success depends on which perspective you see it from, and which of these factors you consider as important.
Now, the factors which you can take into consideration are numerous, but the following can be a few to go by:
- How much time you want to spend with family and friends, as well as with yourself
- Physical and mental/spiritual well-being
- Success at work
- Exactly WHICH work you like to do
- Whether you’d prefer being more busy or at leisure
- What hobbies or other things apart from work you’d like to improve your skills in or learn
Most of these factors always have some role in our life. But in thinking about success, some can assume a more important role than others. It can be that one or two factors can be the major things for you, others can be less important and still there can be others which you ignore altogether.
I don’t mean to say that you must go by just a few things which you consider important (or have been told to consider). We should always try out different and new things to know where our interests lie, what makes us tick and what we need to stay away from. But as you try it all out, you may come to know that there are things which matter more to you than they matter to others, or that one thing is more important to you than the other one. Just like many other things, we can’t know it all from the start. We need to experiment and keep trying until we know what works best for us.
Thus the ultimate thing is that everyone is going to have a different view about what success is. So although you can’t have a fixed universal definition of success which is applicable to everyone, you can always define your own unique success, which is as good as (or actually better than) a definition which is known all over…
What defines your success? What can you add to or delete from my small list of ‘factors’ while you define success? Let me know!
