Boise Ed: The middle guy of panel 3 is the boss in Rudy Park. Why, in panel 4, is the Dalek going after Susan’s boss in Darrin Bell’s other strip, Candorville? There has been no indication of a crossover between the two.

“Wildly Inappropriate”??

This strip’s punchline — which is kind of odd no matter what — assumes there’s only one version of “appropriate” in these things. When I was a kid, we called all our parents’ friends by their first names, but our friends’ parents by their surnames. No exceptions as far as I can remember.

In the neighborhood where our kids went to elementary school, all adults went by their first names (though when one of them became our younger son’s teacher, she shifted to “Mrs. L —” for him but remained “M —” for his older brother).

Then we moved across the state, where local custom dictates that all adults be called by their surnames by the younger generation, even the ones who are essentially family. One of these kids — who’s like a nephew to us, and is in his late 20s now and about to be married — tried out calling me “Bill” for a few days, apparently felt uncomfortable with it, and went back to “Mister Bickel.”

I doubt this is actually true, so what’s the joke here?

Or did Mssrs. Cantu and Castellanos just really get lazy one day?

Edited to add: You know, this whole sequence would make a lot more sense if the federal government or anybody else actually were censoring comic strips.

Absent that, they seem to be satirizing something they themselves made up.
