About the American Birding Association
The American Birding Association inspires all people to enjoy and protect wild birds.
The American Birding Association represents the North American birding community and supports birders through publications, conferences, workshops, tours, partnerships, and networks.
The ABA’s education programs promote birding skills, ornithological knowledge, and the development of a conservation ethic.
The ABA encourages birders to apply their skills to help conserve birds and their habitats, and we represent the interests of birders in planning and legislative arenas.
We welcome all birders as members.
Concern for the welfare of birds lies at the core of ABA and touches everything we do. ABA has developed a code of ethics for birding, provided here in multiple formats for you to download. The ABA encourages all birders to print and follow these guidelines to preserve the welfare of wild birds and the integrity of birding.
We invite you to join the American Birding Association today! As an ABA member, you’ll be immediately welcomed into a network of helpful, fun, passionate birders, as well as helping advance our education and conservation initiatives. And we’ll do everything we can to make your membership experience meaningful, rewarding, educational, and fun.
The ABA is all about birders sharing the wonder and excitement of birding across North America and around the world. We are the voice and face and heart and soul of the birding community. Joining the ABA will make you a better birder. You joining the ABA will make birding better for all. The only thing missing is you—join the ABA today!
About Shade Grown Coffee
Diagram from Víctor M. Toledo & Patricia Moguel (2012): Coffee and Sustainability: The MultipleValues of Traditional Shaded Coffee, Journal of Sustainable Agriculture, 36:3, 353-377 |
Historically, coffee plants are shade-loving plants growing under a canopy amongst forest trees. Growing coffee under shade takes longer to ripen than non-shade or full sun coffee beans, producing deeper and richer flavors. Shade grown coffee farms not only produce the best tasting coffees, they also support a wide biodiversity of natural habitat and ecosystems. These conditions in turn allow for a higher diversity of birds, plants, pollinators, mammals and other species vs. the monoculture of full-sun coffee plantations. With the wide proliferation of sun coffee plantations, thousands of valuable diverse habitats have been cut down and turned into a monoculture devoid of significant natural lifecycles. Sun grown coffee plants produce beans faster, significantly lessening a flavorful bean for roasting. Purchasing organic, shade grown Song Bird Coffee certified Bird Friendly® by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center is not only good for the habitats and ecosystems they create, it is also great for people, too! Rich and flavorful tasting coffee produced by certified organic coffee farmers that in turn protect water sources for the communities they live in and makes stronger local economies. SMBC’s Bird Friendly® certification is the only one that is 100 percent guaranteed organic and shade-grown, and translates to the healthiest farms.
