On December 12-13, 2015 a scientific random sample of 317 of the residents of the Capital City Ulaanbaatar gathered for two days of deliberation about major infrastructure projects proposed in the city’s master plan.
In response to the 2014 No.1 Research Program of Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, a Deliberative Poll was held at Puxing Sub-district in Pudong New District, Shanghai on May 31st, 2015. Advised by the Center for Comparative Urban Governance (CCUG) at Fudan University, the Deliberative Poll invited ordinary citizens to participate in selecting projects that receive “Neighborhood Committee Self-governance Fund”.
In collaboration with our partners at Keio University in Japan, a city-wide Deliberative Poll was conducted in the city of Sapporo, Japan. The Deliberative Polling® event focused on the important issue of snow removal and snow management in the city. Annually, the city of Sapporo experiences one of the highest snowfalls in the world, as such the city faces tough decisions of how to manage snow efficiently and effectively for the safety and livelihood of its residents.
For the first time, the central government introduced Deliberative Polling® to better reflect public opinion in compiling basic policies for nuclear power and other energy sources. The public opinions expressed will be used in deciding basic energy policies.
The first Deliberative Polling® event held in Macao was on the subject of the Press Law and the Visual-audio Broadcasting Act.
A poll was held at Hokkaido University on the subject of on Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) – “Mad Cow Disease”.
On Saturday August 11, 2011, a stratified random sample of 193 residents of Seoul and its surrounding metropolitan area gathered together in a large assembly hall of a regional training facility in the outskirts of Seoul. They were gathered to discuss various aspects of the Korean unification issue – the conditions, timing, and consequences of reunifying the two Koreas – and were prepared to tackle the issue for the rest of the weekend.
To date, our collaborators in Hong Kong have not conducted a full-scale Deliberative Poll in the special administrative region. However, the CDD continues to work with Robert Chung, the director of POP at HKU on pilot projects and trainings.
A Deliberative Poll on was held at Keio University on May 28 and 29, 2011 in Mita, Tokyo. The main theme was “Pension System, A Generational Choice.”
The Deliberative Poll has been used for policy making purposes by administrative bodies in America and Europe as a way to hear well informed citizens’ opinions, something that conventional polls cannot achieve. The Kanagawa deliberation on Federalism reform is Japan’s first attempt.
