College Research Study

Hello friends - Bearded is once again looking for participants for a research study. This time we are specifically looking for students who are 18-20 who either: have chosen or are currently choosing a college to attend; or are in or completed their first year of school at a college or university. We will primarily conduct this study remotely so they don’t need to be in the Pittsburgh area, although we may offer an in-person option if they are. We will be providing a $75 Amazon gift card for their time and feedback. If you know anyone who fits this criteria, or know someone else who might, feel free to share this post and/or this link for interested students to fill out:

Introducing the Climate Change Action List

At Bearded, we care a lot about the environment. We respect science and scientists, and we hear what they say when they tell us that climate change is real, and one of the greatest threats to our world, our species, and our way of life.

Climate change is real, and it’s scary. But what can we do to help? When we looked out at the web and tried to find practical things we could do in our own lives to help climate change – it wasn’t as easy to find as we’d expected. That’s why we decided to make the Climate Change Action List.

We’ve put together a list of things you can do to help prevent further climate change, culled from a variety of respectable sources around the web. You can pick which ones might make sense for you, review the sources we cite for each one, and then commit to do it.

Once you’ve made up your list of what you’re willing to change in your own life to help, you can share that custom list with the world, and encourage others to do the same.

It’s a small thing, but it’s what we’ve done with our skills – designing and building custom web applications – to try to help just a little bit with what we believe is the greatest challenge currently facing humanity.

Won’t you commit to making your own changes, and help us share this with the world? After all, when it comes to the planet, we’re truly all in this together.

Intro to Usability Workshop

Bearded will be running three Introduction to Usability Testing workshops at some of our favorite design conferences in April and June 2017!

You can sign up for the following dates and cities:

Here’s a description of all the fun stuff we’ll do together:

A successful web product meets not just the needs of your organization, but also the needs of your users. Usability testing – done early and often – is a critical way to check stakeholder and web team assumptions. It bridges the gap between what we expect and what people actually do. Through a hands-on, interactive workshop, Bearded will train your team to:

Decide at what points in product development to perform testing
Recruit usability testing participants
Test remotely vs. in an in-house usability lab
Decide whether to perform moderated vs. unmoderated testing
Test on multiple devices
Create a protocol that is free of bias and gets you the data you need
Facilitate and record sessions
Analyze sessions to strategize next-step revisions

See you there!

Part of getting to a better place in the new year is recognizing where we have sway, and going past our own discomfort to create positive change in ourselves and in the world. Those of us who have a role in the hiring process can do better by thinking critically about culture fit. Bearded founder Matt Griffin challenges us to consider whether it actually creates the kind of team that’s the best for the enterprise, or mostly serves to make us comfortable by surrounding us with people largely like ourselves in ways that aren’t relevant to the business.
