Perhaps looking to get around licensing issues with H.265/HEVC, Apple has silently become a founding member of the Alliance for Open Media, a group working on a new video compression format known as AV1.

As first reported by CNET, Apple unexpectedly popped up on the Alliance for Open Media website today as a Founding Member. It would appear Apple has suddenly become serious about the Alliance’s effort to create AV1, an open, royalty-free alternative to the HEVC/H.265 video codec that’s currently all but necessary in order to send 4K video over the internet.

You can now try AV1 video compression in a browser. Video files are at least 25 percent smaller than Apple’s preferred format, Mozilla says.

As Google’s new open source AV1 video standard nears completion, the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) has announced that Facebook will be joining them to promote the AV1 video compression format.

There is a well-documented explosion of online video traffic that’s been occurring for some time now. According to Cisco’s Virtual Networking Index reportlast June, online video could make up 82% of all online traffic by 2020, rising from 59 percent in 2014. Video is already far and away the largest source of network bandwidth consumption. And of course, bandwidth is costly, both for wired and wireless networks. This year Verizon is looking at capital expenditures of over $17 billion. When examined, this budget can be traced back to building out capacity for greater throughput.
