How To Support Good Journalism

How To Support Good Journalism

I’m thinking of the dismemberment of robust local news outlets across huge swaths of the country in the past five to ten years. If they haven’t been gutted, they’ve closed. That goes for big outlets, like the Wall Street Journal, and especially for medium-sized and small outlets with a strong tradition of fact-based reporting, like the Kalamazoo […]

Physical

It has been six weeks since I quit everything and moved to a different town, and four weeks since the new Knight-Wallace adventures in Ann Arbor have been in full swing. It’s such a tempo shift. Without deadlines sharpening every minute of every day for the first time in years, things feel – more tentative. […]

Goodbye Home, Hello What Comes Next

Goodbye Home, Hello What Comes Next

After nearly five years in my New Center apartment — the longest I’ve ever lived in one place as an adult — I’ve come upon my last evening here. Tomorrow, I move to Ann Arbor for a one-year journalism fellowship at the University of Michigan. It is an unbelievable opportunity, and I’m thrilled about it. But as […]

Storytelling

Storytelling

I am a writer. I am a reader. But there are times when words fail me. This is one of those times. I have some big news. I want to tell you about it. Just this once, though, let me tell you this story with mostly pictures. This is my old copy of James and the […]

Infinity

Infinity

I lived in an intentional community in Boston for a few years. Rooted in the principles of the Catholic Worker movement—social justice, simplicity, self-governance, spirituality, creative nonviolence, and radical hospitality—Haley House has stood in a brick row house at the corner of Dartmouth and Montgomery streets for fifty years. As part of the community, I ran the Wednesday […]

Exhale

Exhale

I grew up by the water. Just a few blocks away from one of the great inland seas. It won’t surprise you that I spent a lot of time in that lake. The tiny push-pull of the current on my skin felt as natural as air. Shells and stones burrowed in the cool sand pocked the softness of […]

This Day

This Day

Well, then. Life brims. As I’ve taken a breather from this little corner of the internet, so much has filled up. I don’t even know how to begin telling the story of how much work and community has been threaded through the days. It has been breathless and exhausting. The past six months, I […]

Detroit 1968

This deserves your notice: Detroit 1968, a collection of photographs — mostly portraits — from a city at its pivot point. It was originally published in 1972 under the title New American People, which fascinates me. The nameless faces peopling this book are photographed while they are in the midst of something: their […]

The Heirs of Steinbeck

I wrote for the good folks at Pacific Standard about the 75th anniversary of The Grapes of Wrath — such a fierce and fearless novel. As the magazine's intro text puts it, "The Grapes of Wrath is still a staple in most American classrooms. Is that because we haven’t yet written anything that […]
