Inspired Maker Monday: Melissa Horvath

We’re catching up with Melissa Horvath of Sweet Water Decor for this week’s #InspiredMakerMonday! Melissa attended Inspired Retreat in the Spring of 2016 and used the retreat to boost her confidence, streamline her systems, and continue to grow her business full-time. Let’s see how things have changed since Inspired Retreat, and hear some of Melissa’s business wisdom in her own words!

Where were you in your business journey when making the decision to attend Inspired?

I was a year and a half into my business, and I had just hired on my first employee. I had quit my full time job in the fall of 2015 to work on SWD full time and attended Inspired Retreat in the Spring of 2016.

Knowing what you know now, what would you tell yourself on Day 1 of starting your creative business?

This is going to be bigger than you ever imagine. Stay the course, don’t sweat the small stuff, and listen to your heart.…

Last night I danced with a tub of ice cream.

Last night I danced with a tub of ice cream.

And then I shared it with 14,000 people.

If you watched it, you were probably wondering, “why on earth is she dancing with her ice cream? Is that the new marketing strategy for Inspired Retreat?”

No, it’s not.

I’m just a mama gearing up for a long night of work after getting my monkeys in bed. And, when you open the freezer and behold a beautiful little carton of ice cream that you can eat all by yourself without sharing… you get excited enough to dance for a few thousand Internet BFFS.

When I shared that video, I wasn’t thinking about Inspired Retreat, Joyful Garden Planner, or my marketing consulting clients.

I was thinking about all the other mamas out there who, like me, have their hair tied up in a sloppy bun after a long day in the work and family trenches… mamas who are getting ready to sit at their computers for the late night shift—when all they want to do is climb into a warm bed and sleep until next week.…

When did you attend Inspired Retreat? September 2016

Where were you in your business journey when making the decision to attend Inspired?  I was learning everything I could possibly learn and soaking up every bit of knowledge I could get.

Knowing what you know now, what would you tell yourself on Day 1 of starting your creative business? If the desire and passion are there… Go for it! Don’t be afraid!

What is one action item from your Inspired Retreat experience that has changed your business and/or mindset?
Divorce your story and marry your truth. My online business is my ministry.…

9 Reasons Why Small Retreats are Better than Large Conferences

Bigger is better? Nope.

Smaller conferences and retreats offer a whole lot of advantages over larger conferences. (That’s not to say I don’t participate and still attend conferences, because I do, but there’s something magical about a smaller gathering.)

I created Inspired Retreat to be the opposite of the conferences I had experienced time and time again. I wanted to package up all the good stuff that I loved about attending workshops and bring it to other creative mompreneurs and business owners.

So, if you’re making plans this upcoming season to invest in a business learning experience, I’m sharing all the ways smaller conferences like Inspired Retreat are a better investment to the larger conference experience:

1. You’ll form genuine connections who will become trusted friends.

Side conversations are where the good stuff happens. Big conferences are filled with hundreds of people, and, yeah, you’ll introduce yourself to each other between breaks and exchange a dozen business cards, but you’ll rarely have the opportunity to dig deeper.…

5 Reasons to Invest in Educational Experiences as a Business Owner

When I started my stationery and wedding businesses, I intentionally sought out educational workshops and conferences. I knew that they held powerful insights and knowledge, not to mention the key to new networking and referral possibilities—so I signed up for as many as I could within my business budget.

That meant I went to some absolutely amazing ones as well as a few that had room for improvement. (It’s one of the reasons why I’m so passionate about hosting a unique, intimate, and actionable experience at Inspired Retreat.)

Making the decision to invest in a premium educational experience for your business is not an easy one.

If you’re on the fence about attending an educational workshop or conference, one of my favorite ways to narrow down the list is to reach out to past attendees to ask them about their experience and if they got enough out of the experience to be worth the investment.…

Featured: Belong Magazine

Inspired Retreat was recently featured in Belong Magazine, a quarterly digital and print magazine celebrating the art and community of blogging, social media, and creative entrepreneurship. This is one of my favorite resources for inspiration and nuggets of knowledge. Their mission “to inspire women to be authentic, to be life-giving, and to encourage one another” is so in line with the mission of Inspired Retreat:

We believe that you can run a profitable and successful business with heart and purpose that allows you more time and energy for your family and for the simple joys in life.

I had the opportunity to meet the founder and editor, Brooke Saxon-Spencer in person at the Alt Summit back in January. She is such a talented woman with a passion for equipping creatives with actionable business advice and resources. (And y’all know how I love actionable content!)

You can buy the latest issue of Belong Magazine here.…
