He studies the molecular origins of hypertension using approaches spanning from whole-organism physiology to single molecule biophysics. He has a long history and interest in science activism and education, including  judging science fairs, organizing campus groups as an undergraduate, giving talks on research ethics, and on cognitive biases and their effects on scientists, and MCing the unveiling of the world's largest periodic table of the elements.  1/24/2017

Kate Gage has spent the last 8 years working in the Obama Administration on the intersection between technology and global challenges with a focus on innovation and global development. Most recently she worked in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy with the President’s Science Advisor and the Chief Technology Officer on the White House’s international science and technology priorities. Before that, she was on the founding team of the U.S. Global Development Lab at the U.S. Agency for International Development, which was created to lead the U.S. Government’s work to develop and scale technologies to address global development and humanitarian challenges. While at USAID she worked on the use of technology - specifically digital tools and connectivity efforts - during the Ebola crisis in West Africa and was part of the team to launch a number of Grand Challenges and agency initiatives. Starting in Iowa in 2007 and continuing through the 2008 election, she was on the National Advance Staff for Obama for America, and organized the Concert at the Lincoln Memorial on the eve of President Obama's Inauguration.

She maintains and creates visual aspects, advertising, and collateral design for the company’s six brands. Before that she was the Organizing Operations Director for the 2016 Florida Democratic Coordinated Campaign, responsible for the logistical, procurement, and staffing needs of the Organizing Program. Before her time in Florida, she taught secondary mathematics in Baltimore City Public Schools, teaching students from 9th to 12th grades.  2/6/2017

She's a Chicagoan in New York City, with a deep love for live music, sports, and craft beer. Courtnie studied Political Science & Industrial/Organizational Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and then she studied law at Florida A&M University College of Law. Courtnie is the Media Coordinator for Asgard Radio, an up-and-coming Internet rock radio station, for which she is an amateur concert photographer as well. Courtnie also is a moderator on Reddit for several communities and the volunteer AMA Coordinator for the r/music community, which helps fulfill her love of live music. For all of these organizations, Courtnie helps manage the social media content across several platforms. Her passions outside of music include politics, Chicago sports, and figuring out how many IPAs she'll have to drink before she finds one she enjoys.

She completed her graduate work at the California School of Professional Psychology at AIU, a program which was the recipient of the APA Suinn Minority Achievement Award for its diversity training and its rate of graduating diverse students. In her postdoctoral fellowship at VA San Diego Healthcare System/UCSD, she served on the diversity committee, completed formal diversity and social justice advocacy mentorships, and co-contributed diversity training materials to the UCSD Department of Psychiatry. 1/27/2017

She is founder and principal of Ocean Collectiv, a consulting firm that creates and amplifies solutions for a healthy ocean, while centering social justice. She earned a BA in Environmental Science and Public Policy at Harvard, worked on ocean policy at the EPA and NOAA, and was recently a resident at TED.
