Nigel is the former leader of the UK Independence Party - Ukip - and is an MEP for South East England.
He took over the leadership in 2010 and presided over the party's first election win, when Douglas Carswell won the Clacton by-election.
He has stood as a candidate for parliament seven times, but is yet to win. His best performance was in the 2015 General Election, when he second in South Thanet, losing by 2,800 votes.
On the day of the election in 2010 - when he came third in Buckingham - he was involved in a plane crash and was pulled semi-conscious from the wreckage of the light aircraft. He made a full recovery.
He has been married twice. In 1988, he married Gráinne Hayes, by whom he has two children: Samuel and Thomas. The couple divorced in 1997 and two years later he married Kirsten Mehr, a German national, with whom he also has two children, Victoria and Isabelle.
