Last week was my last at FB. While proud of my teams and their work, many company actions didn’t match my values. Sadly, internal reaction to NYT story will focus on misleading elements (which exist), but totally fail to understand why people are angry

upon reflection, this is precisely why I'm not enjoying advent of code this year, and I'm sort of pissed at myself that I poured so much time into it

the sad thing is that it was an interesting problem, and getting a solution that worked on the test cases was really satisfying, but all I'll remember tomorrow is how I couldn't figure out how to optimize it to finish on the one input that counted

Day 20: I reasonably quickly got to a solution that passed all the test cases, and then it was too slow for the real input. I wasted like an hour trying to find a trick to make it fast enough then gave up. I might be done for the year.

This is maybe weird, but I hate reading aloud. It really strains my voice, similar to the way that shouting in a noisy bar does. (Whereas talking normally for e.g. an hour does not hurt my voice.) Certainly there's something about it that I'm doing wrong, but I have no idea what.

Sometimes it seems utterly insane to me that educational professionals can look at a typical classroom and think "yes, this is what a childhood ought to be." But it's not insane. It's a standard feature of humans to be this recklessly unobservant when it suits you.

Important lesson: Injecting the humanities into everything will not necessarily make them more ethical. There is nothing special about studying the sciences that makes people bad and nothing special about studying the arts, humanities, and social sciences that makes people good.
