    It's really interesting to see conservatives framing the applause of an audience as a sort of tactical political "gaffe"

    That’s not an own goal, it’s an image that millions upon millions of law-abiding gun-owners will see and rightly react against. Those are cheers for the revocation of a civil liberty that’s essential to our constitutional republic.

    Honest, maybe stupid question: What “reason” is being referred to here? For some reason I assumed that the right officially doesn’t recognize shoootings as a societal problem, that it’s more of a “cost of freedom” situation. But do they have their own competing theory?

    Every decent person is horrified by what happened yesterday in Parkland. Every thoughtful person knows something horrible is going on in American society. Tragedies like this happen for a reason and it probably doesn't have much to do with guns.
