    This is so confusing. When listening to believers around me talking abt God it never felt right, all the names, characterization... So I always believed I was more agnostic or atheist for believing that there was no God but the universe itself: infinite, unfathomable, beautiful

    Read the thread. In Judaism, repentance is a process—and one that involves amends/reparation for harm. It’s not a one day thing. And people—the victim of harm, specifically—can choose to forgive, but atonement comes from God. Not the same thing.

    Cohen is atoning and seeking peaceful resolution amongst a calamity. Where others have not atoned or sought forgiveness.

    Detach “acting the right way in every context” from “being holy.” The Holiness Code in Leviticus boils down to, in large part, “care for and protect the vulnerable and do not exploit others sexually”, so maybe start there.

    I credit Moses as the founder of the religious organization I find myself most easily fitting into: "Yes, G*d, I understand what you want me to do, but I really don't wanna. Please ask someone else. Please?" We need an acronym or something before the group will really take off.

    Used to live in Pittsburgh. His kind regard got me through many a rough week in grad school. The last time I saw Fred, we were at church, and he said “I’d be honored if you’d introduce me to your partner.” Still treasure that moment.

    Totally. But he’s so human. Eg The burning bush scene is all about Moses being terrified by the call to his true work in life and trying to get out of it any way he can.

    I’ve always found Moses’s exasperation in that story very endearing. It humanizes him so much. “these friggin people…gimme a break already” kind of thing.
