It's Victoria's biggest ever parenting package to help our littlest Victorians – and their brand new mums and dads.

Change is never easy – but nothing that’s really important ever is. Despite the hurt and disappointment we will continue to live our values, keep our promises and get things done. That’s what Victorians voted for last November, and that’s what we will keep delivering.

Our party, movement and supporters are hurting. But we have to keep working for better schools and hospitals, more jobs and the infrastructure projects that set us up for the future. We have to keep working so Victoria and Australia are fairer and stronger.

I also spoke with Bill and Chloe Shorten. I told Bill to hold his head up and be proud that he’s spent his entire working life fighting for the things he believes in.

Last night I sent Scott Morrison a text message congratulating him on a big win. It’s something he and his family should be proud of. Now it’s time to find the common ground to work together for Victorians. I’ll do that wherever I can.

Because that’s the Australia I want to live in. A fair, decent country that looks out for everyone – not just the big end of town. Now let’s bring it home. #ausvotes

In his last act of public life, Bob wrote an open letter to the people of Australia. In it, he urged us to not only protect his legacy, but to continue pushing for that fairer future. In Bob’s name, we will. Solidarity forever

But for so many in our movement, he was and will always be the father of Medicare. The man who made sure that most fundamental right – healthcare – was afforded to every Australian. The man who created the foundation of fairness on which our modern nation was built.

Rhode Scholar. Yard Drinker. Staunch Unionist. Member for Wills. Labor’s longest serving Prime Minister.

And yet that boy from Bordertown would leave us with the most extraordinary legacy. In the coming days, that legacy will be remembered in a multitude of different ways.

More than any other, Bob Hawke was the people’s Prime Minister. Australians saw themselves in him, and he saw himself in us. The son of a school teacher and a minister, he grew up in the most ordinary of circumstance.

We can’t go it alone on this one – and we shouldn’t have to. The only way we can get massive projects like this off the ground is by having a government in Canberra who wants to work with Victoria, not against us. But only you can make that happen.
