If you’re connecting to a public WiFi network, and can’t get the generic “click here to connect” page to pop up, open a browser (in incognito/private mode seems to help) and access routerlogin.net. This is normally the page one uses to access one’s home router, but 95% of the time in my experience, it automatically redirects to the pesky connect page at Starbucks, the library, Panera, etc. if you can’t get it to pop up on its own.

With all the news about Hurricane Florence I haven’t seen any major articles by western news about Mangkhut. The Philippines are in tons of danger right now. I know that at least Hong Kong (where I live) is storm-proofed very well, but Taiwan, mainland China and especially The Philippines may be hit incredibly hard.

As someone very prone to UTIs I’ve learnt ways to reduce my risk of contracting them. There are of course the things you always do (pee after sex, wipe the right way) but sometimes those things aren’t enough for everyone. Consistent UTIs can lead to a bladder infection which could be extremely serious. By doing the following I’ve reduced my UTIs to maybe one every 3 or 4 months, opposed to 1 every month:

  1. The days after sex drink a lot of water
  2. Take vitamin C! Not too much (it can upset your stomach), but around 2000 mg extra a few days after sex. This makes your urine too acidic for bacteria to thrive
  3. You may find that taking D-Mannose (a compound found in cranberries) may help treat early symptoms of a UTI. This is !!!NOT!!! a replacement for medical attention, however. It’s important to treat a UTI as soon as possible. But if it’s midnight and you’re in pain it could help get you through the morning
  4. Try condoms made from polystyrene, like the brand Skyn or lambskin condoms. You could be latex allergic/sensitive
  5. Keep Azo on hand. It will eliminate the symptoms accompanied by a UTI. Again, NOT a replacement for medical attention but you may be able to get some sleep until you can see a doctor

Sources: Vitamin C: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/healthlibrary/conditions/kidney_and_urinary_system_disorders/urinary_tract_infections_utis_85,P01497

D Mannose: https://www.google.com/amp/s/tonic.vice.com/amp/en_us/article/d7pjvq/how-i-healed-my-never-ending-uti

Good luck and happy peeing

EDIT: I am in no way a medical professional. Follow all advice at your own risk. These are just ways I’ve found that work for me. Never be afraid to talk to a doctor for solutions that work for you.

You can keep the heat on, and have the air conditioner activated, which will “remove the moisture inside the vehicle by circulating the air through the cold fins in the evaporator, which will turn the humidity in the air, back into a liquid, and remove it from the inside of your car.”

The recirculation feature keeps that moisture in the vehicle, so make sure that’s turned off as well.

I’ve now had three people acted shocked or argue with me about this fact, so I assume it’s not well known.

Emergencies can happen out of nowhere and having a card with important information could save your life one day! This is especially important for young (or older) ones that are close to you that may not be able to recall information easily.

Laminate!

Laminating the card is important because it will be able to resist moisture and wearing of the paper. Amazon is sells a 5-pack of Self-Healing laminating pouches for $5.48. In a pinch, you can use any clear tape. Something is better than nothing.

Creating the card

I used Microsoft Word and inserted a Table that had 2 horizontal sections so I could fold it in half and laminate it so it is a double sided card. How it looks is your preference but make sure that it is readable to others. You can also have multiple cards (possibly taped taped so it can slinky out) if you run out of space..

A standard credit card size is 85.60mm × 53.98mm & 3.370in ×2.125in. Make sure to make the table small enough so that when you laminate it, you have enough room on the outside for the laminate to stick to each other and create a moisture barrier.

The Information

Below is a couple of points that may get you started but not an exhaustive list. Remember, this is YOUR emergency card and you should have as much information on it that YOU think anyone trying to save you will need. I wanted to save space, so I decided to leave out any information from my driver's license.

Basic Information:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Date of Birth
  • Race
  • Weight
  • Height

Information for Emergency Services:

  • Blood Type
  • Medications
  • Allergies
  • Medical Conditions

Healthcare:

  • Doctor's Contact
  • Insurance Information
  • Preferred hospital network

Emergency Contacts:

  • Phone Number
  • Name
  • Relation to you

Other:

  • Date that card was updated
  • Note that you have a pet at home that is alone

This is a relatively new scam that has been popping up. Here's how it works:

- Scammer contacts legitimate landlord about a property, gets the box code and goes into the house to take pictures.

- Scammer creates a fake posting on Zillow, Trulia, etc. and advertises the property for far less $$

- You contact the scammer and they give you the legitimate box code to get in. You see the property and you like it.

- Scammer asks you to wire the funds to cover the deposit into their account since they are "out of town" for some sob-story reason.

And then you are out of the deposit. Consider a real-estate agent who specializes in these kinds of things!

thin.npr.org and lite.cnn.io both strip their respective full websites down to bare bones, just text files so that you can load them and get news with minimal data/connectivity.

You can find out more about sites like these in this article.

(US ONLY. CHECK YOUR LOCAL AND STATE LAWS. CONTACT AN ATTORNEY WITH QUESTIONS)

This is a common tactic of bill/debt collectors, especially with medical bills (which a lot of people rack up in their final days). Debt does not pass to anyone else upon someone's death. They can get paid from the estate, but, depending on your state laws, they're usually pretty low on the order of priorities. If the estate is insufficient to pay the debt, they're written off. Don't get tricked by these shady bill collectors. You are NOT responsible for your loved one's debt (unless you cosigned for the debt of course).

For example, see Wisconsin's statute below:

(1)  Classes and priority. At the time of their allowance, all claims and allowances shall be classified in one of the following classes. If the applicable assets of the estate are insufficient to pay all claims and allowances in full, the personal representative shall make payment in the following order:

(a) Costs and expenses of administration.

(b) Reasonable funeral and burial expenses.

(c) Provisions for the family of the decedent under ss. 861.31, 861.33 and 861.35.

(d) Reasonable and necessary expenses of the last sickness of the decedent, including compensation of persons attending the decedent.

(e) All debts, charges or taxes owing to the United States, this state or a governmental subdivision or municipality of this state.

(f) Wages, including pension, welfare and vacation benefits, due to employees which have been earned within 3 months before the date of the death of the decedent, not to exceed $300 in value to each employee.

(g) Property assigned to the surviving spouse or surviving domestic partner under s. 861.41.

(h) All other claims allowed.

Check your state's laws or contact an attorney if you have questions about this or any specific situation.

Edit:

First, I apologize for not specifying USA. I was very tired when I wrote this post.

I did put at the bottom of the post that your state's laws may vary and to contact an attorney with any questions. However, it's my fault for not putting that in large, bold font. I fixed that.

Second, I see a lot of questions regarding spousal debt. In many states spousal debt is co-owned, so upon death it's not passing to anyone. Therefore, this post doesn't apply. Again, check your local laws and contact an attorney with any questions.

If you're low or moderate income, there may be nonprofit organizations, a local law school clinic, or a pro bono attorney who may be able to help you with basic estate planning, living will, power of attorney for health care and/or finances.

I wanted to post this because I had a client who had debt collectors calling him telling him he should pay off his dad's credit card. The debt collector was very manipulative in these attempts. I just wanted people to know that, in most cases, these debt collectors are lying.

Finally, also note that there's a difference between collecting from the estate and debt actually passing on to family members. If you are the executor or personal representative of the person's estate, you might get these debt collectors calling trying to collect from the estate, but you're not personally responsible for these debts.

US ONLY. STATE LAWS MAY VARY. CONTACT AN ATTORNEY WITH ANY QUESTIONS.

Edit 2:

Laws differ state to state with respect to marital property and how this situation works with spouses. The post was more meant as a caution for parents/children, siblings, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, etc. Your children don't inherit your debt, in most cases that I can think of. The debts are paid out of the estate, but they don't transfer to your kids (or siblings etc.) making them personally responsible.

Beware of deceptive practices by debt collectors. Someone below posted a good way to report debt collectors for violations.

Edit 3:

I'm seeing a lot of confusion about what I'm talking about here. I'm talking about debt collectors lying to family members and telling them they're PERSONALLY responsible for the debt. I'm not talking about creditors coming after the estate or how you have to deal with that if you're the executor or personal representative of the estate.

I just wanted people to be aware and not get tricked by these debt collectors. (Not all debt collectors are bad. Some are great; they work with people, follow the law, and tell the truth. I'm talking about the slimy ones who lie or guilt people into paying even though they're not the people legally responsible.)

So we all know jumpscares are cheap, right? Real horror comes from the setting and atmosphere and all that. But yet, so many producers still keep with it just because they think it'll do something for their movie.

Anyway, I first found out about this site called Where's The Jump? when I was watching the first Paranormal Activity film. I thought it was pretty useful and was pretty spot on with its time accuracy. It really keeps you focused and takes away anticipation if that's your thing.

Note: Minor ones are usually in plain-text and major ones are in bold.

Most come with 0% APR for 12 months so you'll save some money while having the option to pay in installments.

I believe people should know this because when people purchase something this expensive, they have a set plan but they might not know about other opportunities that could save them some money. I have applied and have got approved for one credit card and I plan to purchase a new iPhone with it, making it less expensive for my wallet.

If you need some assistance for which credit cards to apply for, PM me.

I came across this article which contains links for tools used by Maryland and Virginia where you can enter your address to see if you're in a hurricane evacuation zone. Direct links are below.

Maryland Hurricane Evacuation Lookup Tool

Virginia Hurricane Evacuation Zone Lookup Tool

Those is other locations should check to see if their state has a similar tool.

Additional information from FEMA:

  • Know your zone. Evacuations are more common than people realize. Many communities have designated evacuation routes and some even have evacuation zones. Make yourself familiar with these evacuation zones, so if your local authorities issue an evacuation order, you’ll know exactly where to go. Be sure to account for your pets, as most local shelters do not permit them. However, by law, public shelters do accept service animals (e.g., dogs). Remember: if a hurricane threatens your community and local officials say it's time to evacuate, don't hesitate -- go early.

  • Complete a family communication plan. Plan how you will assemble your family and loved ones, and anticipate where you will go for different situations. Choose several destinations in different directions so you have options in an emergency, and know the evacuation routes to get to those destinations. Get together with your family and agree on the ways to contact one another in an emergency, identify meeting locations, and make a Family Emergency Communication Plan.

  • Sign up for local alerts on your phone. Sign up now so you can stay aware if the weather gets worse. Visit https://www.ready.gov/alerts and learn how to search for local alerts and weather apps that are relevant for hazards that affect your area. Download the FEMA app for disaster resources, weather alerts, and safety tips. Earlier this month, FEMA launched a new feature to its free smartphone app that will enable users to receive push notifications to their devices to remind them to take important steps to prepare their homes and families for disasters. The app also provides a customizable checklist of emergency supplies, maps of open shelters and open recovery centers, tips on how to survive natural and manmade disasters, and weather alerts from the National Weather Service for up to five locations across the nation.

  • Make sure your insurance policies are up to date. Hurricanes have caused eight of the ten costliest disasters in U.S. history and just a few inches of water, or strong winds, can cause tens of thousands of dollars in damage. Many states have increased deductibles for hurricanes and not all hurricane related losses are covered under traditional policies. Also, most homeowners insurance policies do not cover damage or losses from flooding. Flood insurance ensures that consumers have adequate financial protection against the devastating effects of flooding, without having to rely on post-disaster loans (usually paid back with interest) or emergency assistance. If you have insurance, review your policy, ensure you’re adequately covered and understand exclusions, and contact your agent for any changes. If you’re not insured against flood, talk to your agent or visit floodsmart.gov. Renters insurance policies are also available and should be considered as they’re often low-cost methods of protecting your belongings.

  • Get prepared now and know what you’re going to do in the event of a hurricane. Planning ahead gives you more options and better control over situations that could become chaotic at the last moment if you’re not ready. To learn more about how to prepare for a hurricane visit ready.gov/hurricanes. Find out about preparedness drills or exercises in your area at ready.gov/prepare.

Previously, the cost was $10 per credit bureau for every freeze/unfreeze, but there were ways around that. I am thrilled to report that beginning September 21, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion must each set up a webpage for requesting fraud alerts and credit freezes at no cost, due to new U.S. law. Further, the law also provides additional ID theft protections to minors. Currently, some state laws allow you to freeze a child’s credit file, while others do not. Starting September 21, no matter where you live you’ll be able to get a free credit freeze for kids under 16 years old.

Anyone concerned with identity theft or privacy with a social security number should have a credit freeze, regardless of age.

Fill a vessel with water that is deep enough for you to drop your eggs in. If the egg sinks, it’s fresh. If it floats, it’s bad. Simple as that.

In light of the controversy of the recent veteran/gas story and natural disasters. Here is a good resource to check on which charities you are contributing to. Looking at some of the salaries of well known charities (e.g. American Red Cross), the CEO has an annual salary of $600K USD - unbelievable.
