Yesterday I spent the morning at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall watching the Urban Warrior Challenge - a little friendly competition between the Army and Marines. It was really cool to meet the soldiers and their families on their home field and watch them put on a show! pic.twitter.com/epqJcVmSNK

Hearing the stories of the refugees we met reminded me that America is still a beacon of hope for millions of people around the world. We have to stop separating families and putting kids in camps. We have to be better.

That’s why when they get here we have an obligation to at least show these people humanity and treat them with dignity. We have a bad history of rounding people up and putting them behind bars and that’s something we need to change.

That can be difficult for us to understand because we live here. People say ‘if they don’t want to be put in jail they shouldn’t try to come here’ but they don’t think about why people try to come here. I mean, we just got lucky by being born here.

Refugees and migrants who come to America don’t want to “infest” our country. They come here because they are fleeing things like terrorism, wars, extreme poverty, high crime rates, drug trafficking, famine, joblessness. They’re willing to risk everything to come here.

We got to meet refugees and hear their stories and it was a powerful reminder of what America represents to people around the world. We’re still that shining city on a hill, a land of opportunity, a place where you can make your dreams come true.
