I feel the same way about cauliflower that Bush did about broccoli. Gotta respect the hate

I gotta say I always found Bush’s hatred of broccoli endearing - and I say that as a big broccoli fan. A man’s gotta have a code

True but evergreen. People have been saying “kids today” since humans emerged from the primordial ooze

.: "For all of Bush’s patrician demeanor — for the decorum and decency that he demonstrated as a former president — there is a straight line between Willie Horton and Donald Trump’s racist demagoguery of undocumented immigrants."

Carter might have been a subpar president ... but he didn’t race-bait and exploit racial divisions to get elected

This tweet blew my mind. Except would you say WASP power is maintained by the votes of non-WASPs?

And so we’re clear: believing that Americans are nostalgic for George H.W Bush is evidence of living in the most hermetically sealed cultural bubble

One more thing on that execrable Douthat piece. It’s about missing WASPs in our political life ... Our current president is a WASP and his entire political agenda is about preserving the political and cultural dominance of WASPs

This is such a remarkable statement of contempt for democracy. In effect is saying that Republican state legislators - elected by a minority of Wisconsin voters - are more representative of the state than a governor & AG elected by a majority of Wisconsin votes

This hasn’t gotten enough coverage. MI Republicans trying to take control of education policy for the next 4 years despite the voters electing a Democratic Governor and Dem majority on the State Board of Education last month.

And Douthat complains about feckless leaders since H.W ... yet aside from Trump who has been our most feckless president since him? His son! And who stocked his administration? Many of the same allegedly competent establishment Douthat has such high praise for

Ok one more thing ... here Douthat is using randomly chosen dates to argue for establishment “competence.” But why cut things off in the mid-60s? Was there some event then that caused people to question establishment confidence?

This paragraph is just insane ... a) there is no serious Bush nostalgia outside the pundit class and b) trust in government declined, in part, because of the actions of a ruling elite that Douthat bizarrely venerates (see, for example, Vietnam & Watergate)
