I'm not saying Microsoft copied us, but the Windows 9 skip DID happen shortly after we killed PHP 6.

Thanks! That's... not *quite* expected behavior. :/

Shouldn't need to do anything special. PHP 7 is remarkably backwards compatible with PHP 5 (for a major version bump). "How" depends on your distro, but it should be pretty simple...

Eh... that's less of a problem.
Not great practice, but certainly less bad than not closing the statement.

Yeah, this is an old pinned tweet.
We'll be updating it after the 5.6 EOL to reflect the state of things.

I'll confess, I kinda wanted to kick out a new version of PHP 5.5 just so I could say "PHP 6 Released!"

It is! Can you share where you're seeing that? Looks like an example on a manual page or in the migration guide somewhere...

And just in case you were asking seriously: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PHP#PHP_6…
TL;DR - There is no PHP 6, and never will be.

Officially 5.6 is planned to EOL on Dec 31 2018. Longer than typical support, but as the last PHP 5, that made sense.
In theory there actually COULD be another PHP 5.6 release yet. Oddly, 7.0 EOL'd last Monday (3 days was "close enough") so it won't have more releases for sure.

Note that these are the LAST releases for the 5.6 and 7.0 branches.
Also, PHP 7.1 is now security only.
