The fact that the WH had not yet scheduled the announcement was an indication that the famously mercurial president could change his mind. Senators and outside advocates for the changes were fretting about that possibility Wednesday morning.

But it was huge GOP edge in rural Mo that guaranteed Hawley's victory. Many rural counties gave him more than 70% of their votes. That overwhelmed McCaskill's 280k edge in major urban/suburban areas.
