MbS' ruthlessness has long been clear, but this also underscores something about America: We're no longer respected. That a close Trump ally again tried to target a dissident on foreign soil suggests that we have close to zero sway--even with "friends."

The first report, by the well-sourced ⁦⁩, depicted the intelligence as vague with targets ranging from US forces in the region to our Gulf partners. This later report in the ⁦⁩ calls the intelligence “unusually specific.” 🤔

It's not every day we receive non-specific, uncorroborated intelligence that an Iran-related entity may be plotting against U.S. interests or a regional ally... it's multiple times a day. Never before has that been tied to a strike group deployment.

Combining these tactics with Bolton and Pomeo's well-documented calls for regime change, an ominous portrait emerges. Trump almost certainly doesn't want war with Iran, but these advisors appear to be doing everything to make it unavoidable by setting the stage for confrontation.

In 2017 Pompeo declassified Bin Laden-related files, some of which pointed to a (mixed) relationship between AQ and Iran. His motives were transparent, selectively releasing files to add another nail in the Iran deal's coffin, as I wrote in .

Behind closed doors, Pompeo took a Cheney and Bolton-esque approach to intelligence he didn’t like, asking the same question over again and hoping for a different answer when their analysis didn't align with his worldview.

He routinely publicly mischaracterized Tehran’s compliance with the terms of the Iran deal, despite his own CIA analysts’ assessment that Iran continued to abide by the deal's stringent verification and monitoring terms.

In some ways, though, Pompeo’s role should be of equal or even greater concern, especially when it comes to Iran-related intelligence, as I wrote in in a post-mortem of his tenure as CIA Director.

The recent profile of Bolton summed it up: "He would stake out a position, and then, if the intelligence didn’t support it, he would try to exaggerate the intelligence and marginalize the officials who had produced it.”

Bolton’s career of skewing intelligence is long and well-documented. In 2002, he tried to cook the books to suggest Cuba was developing bio weapons. He played similar games with Syria and Iraq. It all proved to be too much for his 2006 nomination.

THREAD: There’s no question Iran is a malign actor in the region, but our antennas should go up every time we hear this administration characterize intelligence as the basis for escalating against Tehran--especially militarily.

The “troubling and escalatory indications and warnings” have been hard to miss. But they’ve emanated from or been instigated by the Trump administration.

Thanks for highlighting, . The Iran Deal has helped us avert another disastrous war and an arms race in the Middle East, but ’s administration is sabotaging non-proliferation efforts around the world and hiding Iran’s continued compliance with the deal.

The Kremlin's readout of the Trump-Putin call makes no mention of discussion of the Mueller report or collusion, but Trump's tweet says they discussed the "Russian hoax." Remarkable that the American President is more intent on spreading Russian propaganda than Putin's Kremlin.
