This comes off as arrogant to non-Americans, but is totally reasonable considering that in many ways the world actually does behave as a two part system, with the US on one side and everybody else on the other. I hope this made some sense. Good day and my love to the doggies! 7/7

Since most Americans will mostly meet Americans most of their lives, this shorthand of naming the state is meaningful to them in the same way naming the country is to everybody else. The bias, born of course of the role America plays in the world, is invisible to them. 6/n

This organization of data yields different methods for shorthand so as to convey the most info with the least effort. Since America is in many Americans' minds the default, it makes sense for them to just skip to the next level in the hierarchy as it is more meaningful. 5/n

In your case, everybody except Americans consider the world to be the top item in world geography, followed immediately by all the countries. Americans, however see the world as generally consisting of two parts - America and the rest. 4/n

I've since realized why this was happening, and it's a reason Grey came close to but didn't touch on on the podcast. It seems to the issue here is this: people arrange knowledge hierarchically, but the same data can be arranged in different hierarchies by different people. 3/n

When exchanging phone numbers it always annoyed me that people from that city never prefix their numbers with the 03, forcing their listener to realize that and add it themselves to the number while it was being said, causing misunderstandings. 2/n

Regarding your American paper-cut moment on the latest HI, I have come across a similar phenomenon in my own country, which I have long ago named the 03 issue. 03 is the dialing prefix for the largest and overwhelmingly most culturally influential city there. 1/n
