Chandra is specially designed to detect X-ray emission from very hot regions of the Universe such as exploded stars, clusters of galaxies & matter around black holes. Because X-rays are absorbed by Earth's atmosphere, Chandra orbits above it, up to an altitude of ~139,000 km

Chandra's elliptical orbit takes it to an altitude of 133,000 km (82,646 mi)- over 1/3 the way to the moon -before returning to its closest approach to the Earth of 16,000 km (9,942 mi). Takes about 64 hours & 18 min. to complete an orbit. More: chandra.si.edu/about/tracking…

At ~9:55 a.m. EDT on Oct. 10, 2018, NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory entered safe mode. Analysis indicates the transition to safe mode was normal behavior for such an event. All systems functioned as expected and the scientific instruments are safe.
