74 years ago Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and death camp was liberated by the Soviet Red Army. Approximately 1.1 million people were murdered in Auschwitz-Birkenau between 1940 and 1945; around 1 million of them were Jewish.

This I'm particularly remembering my grandparents, who survived by the skin of their teeth thanks to finding refuge in the UK. My grandfather, Sigi, arrived in Southampton only nine days before the outbreak of war. Many on both sides were murdered.

Semyon was as a young child when he and his mother fled on foot to escape the Nazis in Russia. They survived the war but tragically his malnourished mother died of starvation on the journey home. On we are glad to be providing vital support to this survivor
