Empress Matilda became heir to the English throne around 1126. A female ruler was unprecedented, and in 1135 King Stephen usurped the throne. Matilda fought back, resulting in a Civil War, but she was never crowned. In 1148, Matilda returned to Normandy. She died on 10 Sept 1167.

William the Conqueror died in 1087. William invaded England in 1066 and defeated Harold II’s army at the Battle of Hastings. As King, William created The Domesday Book and built the iconic White Tower of the Tower of London. He died in Normandy from a riding injury.

The 10th ‘Stockbrokers’ Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers was formed in 1914 from those who worked in City firms and at the Stock Exchange. Over 1,600 City workers joined. On 29 August 1914, they were sworn in by the Lord Mayor in the Tower of London moat.
