Empress Matilda became heir to the English throne around 1126. A female ruler was unprecedented, and in 1135 King Stephen usurped the throne. Matilda fought back, resulting in a Civil War, but she was never crowned. In 1148, Matilda returned to Normandy. She died on 10 Sept 1167. pic.twitter.com/Ta0VQq8WUM

William the Conqueror died #OTD in 1087. William invaded England in 1066 and defeated Harold II’s army at the Battle of Hastings. As King, William created The Domesday Book and built the iconic White Tower of the Tower of London. He died in Normandy from a riding injury. pic.twitter.com/5yYAmpnZgi
