Rob, you're right the term is thrown around too loosely. Milbank expresses it much more clearly than I did: Trump constantly uses race/religion/ethnicity as wedge issue, and the examples he cites are only one week's worth.

sorry, have tried hard to listen and be sympathetic to trump supporters. his appeal to racism inescapable, this piece but one of many examples.

Tks, and no, didn't foresee, just recorded what I saw then. But I'm almost done writing another Southern journey, so perhaps a book-end. And FYY, in between wrote A Voyage and Strange, also lots on South though in rather different vein.

After watching last night's Billions, in which Chuck Rhoades outdoes himself as evil legal genius, I'm surprised Trump hasn't latched on to Paul Giamatti as obvious replacement for Sessions as A-G.

Unsung virtue of driverless cars: they should spell an end to stupid car chases in movies.

Tks for kind words, and Voyage in similar antic/serious vein to Confederates and Blue Latitudes. Albeit, earlier era and w/o company of my mate Roger (tragically, since deceased) or the inimitable Robert Lee Hodge. But other characters abound.

thanks both for the kind words and yes, we think everything is new under the sun but a lot of blue collar and white male angst/anger Trump keeps tapping into was readily apparent 20 years ago.

Where's Tom Wolfe when you need him? Love to see what he'd do with emerging chattering-class ruckus on Martha's Vineyard over whether to shun island regular Alan Dershowitz this summer.

Learned a new and wonderful linguistic phrase from this piece, "faux ami," so many potential applications.

Tks, did so in some articles after Late Unpleasantness in Charlottesville, a lot's changed and don't think Confederate remembrance as strong as back then

sad indeed and suspect the vandals knew little or nothing of Brown. possible it was just a convenient target for loathsome graffiti?

Is the ever-more litigious climate one of the constraints? MSM not as big and fearless as 20 yrs ago?
