It’s an excellent monograph; pulls no punches and is detailed and professional. Some of the military tetminology is off beam, but that’s a minor issue

It’s ok. I found it a little tiring to read due to the writing style. But that might just be down to me. Fascinating topic of course

A few years back I visited the site of the attack near Welsh Ridge on a day that it happened to snow. Just another of those compressions of time that happen out on the old Western Front.

I found David Crane’s book a little challenging to read, but an excellent subject that deserves wider appreciation

Paul’s right I think, any one of a number of fusilier titles, like this one, for example. (Also wearing simplified pattern service dress, early-mid FWW period)

Hi George, good question. The image shows men with what appear to be blankets carried ‘en banderole’. As far as I understand blankets were not normally part of the standard equipment of the frontline soldier. The ‘valise’ or pack was used to carry the greatcoat in general

True, many expect the majority of the public to become experts. If only a small minority are inspired to develop a greater interest then the centenary has been a success. That’s always been my philosophy regarding the many school groups I’ve led over the past 10+ years.
