An important review that escaped inclusion in his list of publications. Took courage, too, given Lewis's own relationship to Chatham House.

“Netanyahu is set to pass Ben-Gurion as Israel’s longest-serving PM on Sep. 24. But only if B-G’s term as head of the provisional government, from May 14, 1948, to Mar. 10, 1949, is not counted.” It counts.

David Ben-Gurion in People’s Council, May 14, 1948 (debate preceding declaration of independence): “The language of the state is Hebrew. This doesn’t deprive other inhabitants of the right to use their language in every place.”

Ben-Gurion, Aug. 1, 1967: should keep , (!) West Bank “autonomous but not independent province” (of Israel). Sinai, Golan returned only for “real” peace. (Later in Aug., will say Israel must keep .) Not B-G of Arthur Hertzberg via

Read my piece, carefully. Historians generally require proof that something happened. It’s not like everything and anything is true, unless proven otherwise.

I read it, it is one-volume big sweep, B-G’s last years hardly treated (rightly so). See instead Avi Shilon, who wrote entire book on B-G’s finale. Attached, by Shilon.

Related: Last year a bogus quote attributed to Ben-Gurion '67 appeared in the Independent via Richard Falk. burst that bubble (I'm cited), and paper made a (small) correction
