Scientists this high up wore oxygen tanks on their backs and made sure to check each other's oxygen levels. @rebeccajacobson wrote about that here: to.pbs.org/2X0lG0J (I also couldn't go up to the high site on the second day b/c my blood pressure was too high.)

When @rebeccajacobson and I got to ALMA, we saw scientists and support staff dealing with high altitude sickness and nausea. They said it was worth it. At ALMA's low site, there were a couple telescopes on display. Also, the night sky, at this altitude, was just *chef's kiss* pic.twitter.com/EegoS6Yq69

This image was made possible by a team of intern'l scientists who built the Event Horizon Telescope, an "Earth-sized" telescope that connected 8 observatories around the world -- Hawaii, Spain, Greenland, Antarctica, etc. -- to scan the sky.
