It may be a noble/necessary lie but not true that most ppl who came 1948-1962 were “invited.” There was brief recruitment drive by London Transport and NHS in a couple of Caribbean countries + active recruitment by some textile firms. They came cos they could and there were jobs

I agree that as mobility increases we will need to rethink many things. But, important to remember that these notions have long historical and institutional roots, and mobility of this kind is still a minority experience. Majority of people never move far from where they are born

Great thread Colin, I agree (I don't share Jenkins' view of this). I guess my point (or one part of it) is that an obligation to accept the change that migrants already here will bring is different from the obligation to accept further migration and thus further change.

I'll try and restate. Citizen vs non citizen is a fundamental boundary in nation states. It is qualitatively different from other kinds of group boundaries, in that it is the basis on which our political system and our major policy systems are built.

Much of the migration movement you refer to (rural, Irish) was pre-democracy and pre-welfare state when people did not expect much control - and it did cause massive friction! (And scale of Jewish migration was in total about one year of current net immigration.)
