Trump has said he’ll announce his Court pick on July 9th. But why won’t he cross everyone up and announce on, say, July 5th? He’d get the advantage of surprise, the opposition would be dispersed and disorganized, and his nominee would start with a strong weekend of coverage.

I cannot recommend highly enough the latest with Loyola professor Diana Schaub, on the inimitable Frederick Douglass. Educational, inspiring, and perfect for celebrating America this July 4th.

One reason I like this piece by Kevin D. Williamson so much? It is now in vogue to think of America as small, weak, and pathetic: America the Victim. America the runt who can't compete, and must hide behind walls. KDW's piece says: baloney.

Here is Diana Schaub's marvelous interpretation of Frederick Douglass's insight on statesmanship in the context of Lincoln/slavery, courtesy of . As is so often the case, context/the duties inherent in one's position is vital in assessing one's actions.

Given recent developments in U.S.-Iran relations and within Iran itself, I wouldn't wait too long to read the new book by Eric Edelman and Ray Takeyh, "Revolution and Aftermath: Forging a New Strategy toward Iran."

242 years ago today, the Second Continental Congress resumes debate on Richard Henry Lee’s resolution for independence from Great Britain. The vote is put off until July 2, with the hope of rallying unanimous support. In the event, 12 of 13 states vote yes; New York abstains.

155 years ago today: Battle of Gettysburg begins. "The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here."

One fully expects, in this era, that angry and frustrated liberal law professors will legitimize the idea of court-packing in 2018, and Trump and McConnell will promptly pack the court in 2019.

"The most politic historiographer that ever writ," Thomas Hobbes said of Thucydides. As becomes clear in this Conversation with Paul Cantor, Shakespeare may well have been "the most politic playwright that ever writ."

“Commander Aziz,” Azizullah Karwan, a senior police special forces commander, was gunned down by Taliban as he picnicked with his family in Kabul. “Bravest man I ever knew,” said one veteran. “If there were a dozen more men like him, the war would have been over ten years ago.“
