    It didn’t help that Birmingham turned down Atlanta’s airport. Made infinitely more sense in Alabama’s prime location than all the way over in ATL. Powers that be didn’t want an airport on the Southside, and didn’t want to become what Atlanta is now.

    But Birmingham faces a chicken-and-egg challenge familiar to many midsize cities: It needs jobs to attract workers, and workers to attract jobs. This is at the root of the rich-get-richer trend.

    Agree with last comment in this thread. Mid-size cities benefit from a scale that makes reform in an Amazon HQ2 age possible.

    Amazon’s HQ2 decision was widely portrayed as a rich-get-richer victory of coastal superstars over midsize cities in the middle of the country. But it also revealed a growing gap between midsize cities themselves.

    Finally read this article. A clear pattern of abuse of authority, workplace sexual harassment, and HR complaints that should have raised more flags. I’m sorry those staff members had to go through that. A few thoughts:

    Anyway, much more in the story. I find midsize cities to be fascinating. As Vanderbilt chancellor Nick Zeppos said of Nashville, it’s big enough to have big-city challenges, but small enough it still has a shot at solving them.

    Birmingham seems to be thinking about these lessons. They’re talking a lot about inclusive growth right from the get-go. There aren’t many successful models for them to emulate. I’ll be fascinated to see if they can pull it off.
