I will call a special City Council meeting for this Thursday to discuss these latest developments. I will continue to stand up for Toronto because I believe in this city, in all of its residents and in our ability to chart a responsible course for our great city.

I am reaching out to mayors from other big cities to ask for their support and advice on this extraordinary curtailment of rights as it relates to this city and I believe other cities.

I am reaching out to Prime Minister Trudeau to have a conversation as quickly as possible about the importance of respecting cities and the current situation.

Why is it so important to have these changes in place, whatever you may think of them, for this election to the point that you would override the Charter of Rights and Freedoms for the first time in the history of the province of Ontario?

There are real issues that people want City Council and Queen's Park to deal with like transit, housing, taxes & community safety. There's simply too much at stake and this is not what people want to see their governments focused on.

The Premier invoking the notwithstanding clause to push ahead with Bill 5 following Justice Belobaba's ruling is unprecedented and not acceptable.

My job remains the same as it always has been, to continue working with all levels of government and to keep standing up for Toronto, and I will continue to do both for as long as I hold the position of Mayor.

And I want to thank the other applicants and their counsel for their important and much needed participation and submissions which led to this result.

I want to thank the City's lawyers for representing our case so well and helping us stand up for Toronto - done entirely by our internal legal team.

No law, should ever fail to take that into account and all of us as lawmakers should always remember that. We have stood up for Toronto and our rights as a city.

The court has agreed, & I think this result justifies the decision of council, on a motion strongly supported by me as Mayor to seek the independent judgment of the court. Democracy does not belong to a few of us - it belongs to all of us.

Justice Edward Belobaba has ruled that the province's process, which lacked any public input whatsoever, is wrong and contrary to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. I said at the time & have repeated many times since that you can’t change the rules in the middle of an election.
