    Of course times have changed. You have become the very ones who chastised and discriminated against your own ancestors, who did not speak the language when they came, who claimed they “would never assimilate” which they did. Hypocrisy. .

    And of course her defenders will say "but they came LEGALLY..." but a) it's not the point as per the assimilation issue & b) it's an absurd dodge: there was no law for them to break at the time that was applied to those from Germany, because white folks made the laws. Convenient

    Except the 1930 census says Tomi's 3x great-grandmother had been here for 41 years and still spoke German. Her 2nd great-grandmother had been here for 10 yrs. Spoke no English. Her great-grandfather's 1895 baptism from MN? Recorded in Norwegian.

    I am the world's least confrontational person, btw. I'm a mild-mannered American mom--the granddaughter of immigrants. Really wish this didn't get so hostile and angry. I want this information to teach and open eyes. To unify. Not to further divide.

    What I'm trying to show here is that these nativists can't keep trying to back up their argument by saying "the country doesn't work this way" when clearly it does, and has: for their families. So why do they *really* not want these people here? That's what we need to dig out.

    People are people, and always have been. Some of our ancestors broke laws, some were model citizens. Some never assimilated or spoke English. Some did. Blind lionization of the people who came before us may be just as dumb as the wholesale demonization of current immigrants.
