The original /r/place. by SplatterSack in place

[–]tumbzilla 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I wish I had a more epic story about what r/place was. In truth, it was a dorm joke and the sub had 5 subscribers and a few inside joke posts. Nothing more than that. It started as a joke between roommates about how people should hang out at r/place (our place). We then went to check and see if anyone had created the sub. When we found that no one had, we decided to make it. We never took the time to turn it into anything, though. I think what it has become now is 100x more exciting, and I'm glad I surrendered the sub to the admins for this!

Yep, I created it 5 years ago, mostly because I was surprised it didn't already exist. It quickly became a dorm room running joke that we should hang out more on /r/place

Geez, I need to check reddit more. Yes, I turned the sub over to the admins to create this wonderful place. No regrets!

I created it 5 years ago, but gave it to the reddit admins for the purpose of turning it into the /r/place you know and love.

Have you considered a restricted Boltzmann machine approach? I think that might be a neat thing to try. From my experience, 20k prediction features maybe be a little bit much for an NN, and you wouldn't be able to use information about users' past ratings to predict new ones. From what you've described you're thinking to predict ratings exclusively from watch history?

definitely make sure to record any and all interactions you have with your landlords if you aren't already. If you're at UBC, I believe there are resources to help students having landlord troubles.

Specifically, there's a free consultancy group run by law students at ubc. Check them out here:

I haven't used them myself but have heard that they're quite helpful.

Good luck!

Could it be a power issue? I'm not sure 750 watts is enough for two higher end video cards and a higher end CPU.

That said, he has said in a few interviews that the GPU will also be handling some of the procedural generation. The graphics are less pretty so that the GPU can render graphics, and presumably generate terrain maps as well.

Ain't that the truth. Some researchers like to make bold claims. Those are often the ones that gain undue media attention. I don't know tonnes about this particular case, so I'll trust you on it.

The thing about science is that it's quite rare to have an experiment that will be definitive enough to prove something incorrect. Quite often, the scientific community decides that there is enough evidence against an idea to discard it. I believe that's what's happened here.

First off, while the DSM is useful in the treatment and diagnosis of mental illness, it is absolutely useless when it comes to studying the mechanisms of mental illness. The DSM is just as much political, as it scientific. People with current diagnoses fight to have their diagnosis stay in the DSM in some form, even if research suggests that specific form no longer makes sense due to current understanding. Often, a mental illness is considered as such only if the condition degrades one's quality of life, regardless of whether the understood mechanism is currently present for an individual.

I think the original post was meant to convey that perhaps the mechanism involved in getting rich/greed is similar to that of addiction, but the outcome isn't considered detrimental to the individual's quality of life, and so we as a society do not label it as mental illness.

Neuroplasticity refers to the changing of connections between nerve cells in the brain. Many mental illnesses seem to be related to, at least in part, a slightly differently wired brain. CBT acknowledges this, and attempts, in theory, to use behaviour to coax the wiring back toward a more typical wiring

Actually he's not wrong, but neither are you. There are some thoughts that mental illnesses develop partly due to neuroplasticity, but this phenomenon is also why Cognitive Behavioural Therapy works so well.
