Honestly yeah, but I wouldn't be too pressured to get high clocked RAM/OC it. As for OP's case it has top-tier CPU and GPU anyhow, so I guess its fine.

  1. 6700K is pointless for gaming, a 6700 will provide frames within single digit percentages of the 6700K. But justifiable with the 1080.

  2. Anything over 2400Mhz is absolutely pointless, even more if you're not on iGPU.

  3. Speed is fine, and it's cheaper.

  4. What the fuck even is a "stable" motherboard? Everything except for the cheapest and the shittiest of the motherboards are perfectly fine. You could even say some "gaming" and "overclocking" motherboards are purely aesthetic and have no real impact on overclocking performance. If he doesn't want to push overclocking records with LN2 or whatever, anything from the PCPP list above is fine.

Don't trust reviews too much. You never know which are genuine reviews and which ones are not. Also, a customer with problems is much more likely to complain openly.

Also any decent retail/manufacturer will do RMAs if your board is defective/etc.

  1. 6700K is pointless for gaming, but if it's for work sure.

  2. 3000Mhz RAM is pointless for gaming, but see (1).

  3. Why 2 seperate SSDs? I'd recommend a single SSD, look into the MX300 1.1TB.

  4. That PSU is pointless, I'd recommend an EVGA 550W G2/GS, SeaSonic G550, etc. A good quality 500-600W is enough.

  5. Do not buy OEM windows, buy full retail.

  6. As for motherboard, don't trust reviews too much. Stupid customers always exist, and a quiet customer is a happy one. DOA/Failure rates for all the manufacturers(Asus, MSI, ASRock, Gigabyte, etc) are all pertty much the same. Just get anything from this list. Getting an expensive motherboard does not mean good performance, get the cheapest one that has the features you need.

Bent Motherboard Pins by Z00MS in buildapc

[–]RocketLL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is somewhat true for overclocking. Getting a cheap Z170 motherboard won't be any better than a $400+ motherboard for a few 0.1ghz of OC with an AIO CLC/Air cooler.

You should be looking at the cheapest motherboard available with the features you need.

Intel 600p vs 850 EVO by cd417 in buildapc

[–]RocketLL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Overclocking the CPU at that budget is pretty pointless unless you go for a multi top-tier GPU system. CPU OC will buy you ~10% of performance at best while a better GPU can easily boost a build into 1440/144 capability. Also, a non-oc(i5 6500,i7 6700) will last years to come. An ideal upgrade situation here is upgrading your GPU until the CPU is the bottleneck, then getting a Kaby Lake(maybe) or completely new CPU.

Remember, GPU is always the bottleneck in gaming with a CPU any more than an i3 6100 or i5 6500.

Overclocking will take time, more money(Z-series motherboard, CPU cooler, etc), make your chip run hotter, etc for minimal performance gains.

Paired RAM has dual channeling which means better performance on paper, but it won't make any real difference. You can get 2*8gb too.

So I'd recommend an i7 6700(if video editing), 2*8GB of RAM, a B150/H170 motherboard, a GTX 1080(1070 if budget doesn't fit in), the SSDs I listed, and a good quality ~550W PSU.

[–]RocketLL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He's not on point.

It'll be better for him to get a i5 6500 and a GTX 1080 or an i7 6700 and a GTX 1070. Also that RAM is obscene, just get a single stick of basic 2133/2400mhz 16gb.

Overclocking at that midrange budget is pointless.

Also, I recommend the PNY CS1311 and Crucial MX300 in therms of SSDs. M.2 is just a form factor and a PCIe 3.0 SSD will be pointless here, a 2.5" will be fine.

Snowy Peaks || Minimalistic "3D Audio Visualizer" Theme built with KLWP by RocketLL in androidthemes

[–]RocketLL[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Snowy Peaks" is a one-of-a-kind KLWP theme featuring a "3D Audio Visualizer".

Features

  • "3D Audio Visualizer" - Since KLWP or any of the unrooted Widget/Theming don't support a proper Audio Visualizer, I hacked together my own. I got progress bars that randomly change their length ±15 of the set audio volume. For example, if your volume was 50, the bars' length would be random from 35 to 65. I know this isn't how an audio visualizer works, but it's pretty cool. Also, part of the bars are hidden behind more mountains as a layer for a "3D" Effect and a simple song title display is on the right.

  • Minimalistic yet functional - Time, date, weather, apps, custom app drawer, audio visualiser, song title.. Pretty cool yet useful while looking clean.

Resources

This was never meant to be exported so everything's a little messy and it won't work right out of the box, but everything should be fine. Mainly a proof-of-concept for the audio visualizer.

Thanks!

Meet Amdahl Cube, a new gaming utility for understanding gaming hardware performance before you buy. by AmdahlCube in buildapc

[–]RocketLL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never expected for you to reply, thanks for the effort on your site.

First of all, I personally believe tiering parts based on the performance in the way you have can be quite misleading. There's no definitive "tier" for which GPUs work at which resolution. There are way too many games, settings, displays and general use cases for GPUs to be split apart like that. The best you can do is tier it in order(not in resolution, if that makes sense) like this:

  1. Tier 1: Titan X Pascal, GTX 1080
  2. Tier 2: GTX 980Ti, GTX 1070

And so on.

For example, a GTX 960 is perfectly capable of running something like CS:GO at 1440@60, but according to your website, it can only do 1080p@60. Also, you can run games with their settings turned down a little, if the user wishes to do so.

Simply saying

Note: In general, real-time strategy (RTS) games such as Starcraft 2 are more demanding than others and you can expect to bump down a tier, while multiplayer online battle arenas (MOBAs) like League of Legends are less demanding and well optimized and gamers can expect higher performance levels in those games that they might not see in other popular genres, such as first person shooters (FPS) or action adventure games.

and telling people all the tiers are based on medium settings is not enough and is an arbitrary system.

I'm a usual on this subreddit's IRC channel (#reddit-buildapc on irc.freenode.net, which by the way, I recommend you to check out to chat with me or a bunch of other experts with their thoughts on this matter, as well as subreddit mods), and we frequently get people asking for builds like "A build for 1440p gaming". This is an impossible request as the user's game, settings and use cases are completely unknown. If the user says that he wants to run AAA titles like TW3 on Ultra 1440p@60, that's a request that'll get him a great build and in-depth advice.

So what I'm trying to say is overgeneralizing PC builds with tiers is probably not a good idea and that PC builds should be done on a much more case-by-case basis.

A8 7600 and 690

Okay that's a bit weird, this is 2016. The 7600 not only delivers mediocre performance but is on a dead socket/chipset(FM2+). Also, it's old being built on a 28nm process.

The GTX 690 is old, hot and loud too, being a dual-GPU card on Kepler.

Why chose either of those dead parts when you can choose something like the 6500+1070?

And the i5 6500 will work well on 4k with a good GPU.

Also, I'll just drop this spicy little meme here <3

Meet Amdahl Cube, a new gaming utility for understanding gaming hardware performance before you buy. by AmdahlCube in buildapc

[–]RocketLL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So while I love the attempt to make PC building easier and funner, this site, and more importantly, the tiers are horrible.

  1. Horrible shitty default lists. These are actually horrible. What is this? http://amdahlcube.com/bench?preset=44 Does the creator know anything about PC building at all, or is he trying to leech off an existing meme? APU and GTX 690?

  2. The little descriptions are not well thought out. A 6700K+1080 isn't "The best overall single graphics card rig available today". They might've rushed this part a little, no biggie.

  3. We reviewed numbers from sites like Anandtech and The Tech Report. They do amazing in-depth analysis, and if you want to understand PC gaming, you should read everything they write. Amdahl Cube essentially drew lines where gamers typically do. For example, we looked for parts that could consistently deliver games at a resolution of 1920x1080 at 60 frames per second. If it can meet that threshold consistently, across multiple games in different genres, it would be assigned to that tier. If it can’t, we would look for the performance level it can consistently deliver.

So you guys used third-party benchmarks to create a dataset, and divided parts into "tiers" that way. I would like to see a more in-depth article on how you guys divided things up, as well as individual sources, as I really don't see where you got your results from.

  4. The site encourages shit builds. For example, you rated the 6700K a "4K@60" chip, and while this is somewhat true, it isn't if you put in a GTX 950. The site should give warnings for this kind of thing. Also, a "500W ATX Power supply" could be anything from a good-quality one(Seasonic, EVGA G2/GS, etc) to a shit-quality one. And nothing is stopping someone from choosing a 1600W power supply.

  5. The website is pointless. Anyone could have the same functionality using Google Sheets. It doesn't show any part specs, no prices. No option to export to PCPP, no vendor links, extremely limited hardware, no part reviews, no photos. And it shows a nonexistent piece of hardware. While DDR4 1866mhz technically exists, good luck finding one.

  6. The "tiers" are extremely arbitrary and pointless. What makes the 6500 a "VR" chip? It's perfectly capable of 4K and won't bottleneck any single GPUS in most games. Also, games vary a lot, making GPU tiers pointless. Also the RAM tier is stupid.

  7. May I ask further about the creators? I don't see any sort of sensibility in the site, which makes me question their PC background despite reading the FAQ. If you guys aren't sure about PCs, don't make a bad site with bad advice/builds, ask the community for builds/bring an expert.

All of these things can improve, but it'll be just like PCPP then. I honestly don't see the "tiers" going anywhere.

The best part about the site right now is it's design.

TL;DR: Meh site with bad misleading core tier system, bad build lists, misinformation but could improve. Stick to PCPP for now.
