But for me the realization of what is now calling “’s axiom” (why should it feel any different not to be an employee of a specific organization?) was an epiphany for me 4 or 5 years ago. Everything else in flowed from that.

It’s also important to recognize that being colleagues is a kind of privilege you have to actively push back against—you have levels of access to each other others don’t, and you can’t let that creep into special status.

Any artificial barrier will end up leaving talented and motivated people on the outside with no clear way to contribute. The idea that external "volunteers" won't do many of the things that paid contributors do is a commonly believed myth.

Yeah. The more a project resists using employment as a proxy for trust, the easier it is for contributors to level up to being trusted enough to take on a sensitive role like that.

I have had a hypothesis for a while that people confused "open" as meaning "transparency is the high-order bit." But it's not. The high-order bit is *collaboration*. (Transparency is necessary but insufficient.) It's "open doors" not "open curtains."

“Open by Identity” answers why: you simply do not draw a distinction between outside contributors and internal ones, they are all part of your team. Facilitating your teammate's work is part of your job, so of course you help each other. The how comes out of that motivation.

I’m in a meeting to design a Flexbox Inspector tool… do you have a complicated Flexbox layout someplace that we could look at?? What’s the URL? Also what do you need a Flexbox Inspector to do? When do you get stuck using Flexbox??

Stupid little bugs in services that annoy me: lacking responsive design; failing at multi-threading; missing type=cite in its <blockquote>s.

Mozilla was created as “Open by Identity”: a virtual organization of which internal employees and external (paid and unpaid) contributors are equal participants. The failures of its “open by default” model in practice are merely symptoms of having lost this identity.

It cracks me up that I said this on stage yesterday. (Embodying what it’s like to use minmax() & fr units and get the browser to do the hard work of calculating fluid column widths.) This is kind of how I approach all my work these days. Lol.

Act Now! = separate connectivity market and content market. As separate markets, both have flourished. If the FCC returns us to the old cable TV model — The US will decline as the world’s chief digital innovator. And it will be so boring
