I was talking about Putin’s hope not Bibi’s action. However Bibi and Putin both invoke the 1974 Israel-Syria Disengagement Agreement as source of authority for preventing Iranian proxies from taking up positions on the Golan. Israel’s partner in that agreement is the Asad regime.

15 Russian military killed in Syria. Russian spokesman blames Israel. Putin declares it tragic mistake. Clear indication Putin values his relationship with Israel. Why? Because he hopes Bibi will relegitimize war criminal Asad in Washington and the West.

Now that’s interesting...and worrying. Have the Russians provided Assad with anti missile defense systems that can shoot down Israeli missiles?

Special thanks to my friends and colleagues for their kind tweets. And thanks also to my faithful trolls who, amazingly, tweeted not a negative word yesterday.

Thank you to all the people I encountered along the way-critics and friends alike. You represent the American ideal that brought me from Down Under to the World’s Capital, took me in, lifted me up, and gave me endless opportunities to try to do good despite my funny accent.

Big day for me yesterday. Thirty-five years since migrating to Washington, twenty-five years since the Oslo signing, seventeen years since joining Brookings, I’m leaving Washington and heading for NY and the Council on Foreign Relations.

Contacts tell me that the White House has decided to cut $20 mil in East Jerusalem Hospital funding; severe stress on Augusta Victoria Hospital & St. John’s Eye Hospital. These are Christian hospitals, Israeli licensed, culturally Palestinian.

Bravo Hady Amr, former USAID official and Brookings colleague, for his effort to use logic and facts to touch the conscience and common sense of the Trump White House. Unfortunately it has neither. via

U.S. Ambassador Friedman: Rebuilding Gaza without Abbas is 'tremendous prize' for Hamas. And taking Jerusalem off the table and cutting UNWRA's budget is an even bigger prize for Hamas.

Trump's Middle East diplomacy in action: First strip the Palestinians of all aid, take Jerusalem off the table. Then criticize their leader for not being willing to confront Hamas, without troops, money or political credibility.

As for sensitivity to Israeli domestic realities, Kerry bent over backwards to take Bibi’s political concerns into account. The problem, if I am allowed to say, is that your political leaders are VERY needy.

Failed to deal seriously with Israel’s security concerns? Kerry mobilized over 100 military experts under General John Allen to come up with solutions to Israel’s security needs. Israel’s generals were under strict instructions only to answer their questions. Who wasn’t serious?
