SendGrid is an email delivery engine that allows you to send email without the cost and complexity of maintaining your own email servers. SendGrid manages the technical details of email delivery, like infrastructure scaling, ISP outreach, reputation monitoring, and real time analytics.
SendGrid supports all email types, including transactional email, marketing email, and automated email so that users can send any messages they want to their end users. Through Marketing Campaigns, non-technical users can also create and send marketing newsletters easily within the SendGrid interface.

For SendGrid, the content of your emails doesn’t matter. If you’re using SendGrid as an SMTP relay from another application, or are using one of our APIs to programmatically send your email, then those are considered transactional emails because you would be building the messages, managing your lists, and using SendGrid as your delivery engine.
If you’re using Marketing Campaigns to upload and manage recipient lists, build templated emails, or upload your own HTML, and then schedule and send your campaigns within the SendGrid interface, those messages are considered marketing emails.

No! You can send both transactional emails and marketing emails from the same SendGrid account. However, if you send email using Marketing Campaigns, there is an additional cost to store your list. While we allow you to send Marketing Campaigns emails to 2,000 contacts for free, additional contacts are charged at $10/10,000 contacts.
